š¤ Introduction to Helldivers 2 and Its Context
The video begins with a discussion about the recent Sony decision to mandate PlayStation account linking for playing Helldivers 2, which will be addressed in an addendum. The speaker, Yahtzee, humorously questions why he is reviewing an online multiplayer game, given his preference for narrative-focused games over live service multiplayer games, which he finds emotionally numbing. However, he played Helldivers 2 during a charity stream with colleagues and found enjoyment in it, despite his general aversion to such games. The enjoyment was not solely due to playing with friends, as the game itself doesn't pretend to be more than a ' Skinner box live service grindathon.' The game's narrative is appreciated for its honesty and context, drawing parallels to the movie Starship Troopers, where the player is a part of a totalitarian regime's endless war against alien bugs.
š® Helldivers 2 Gameplay and Player Experience
The speaker details the gameplay of Helldivers 2, which involves completing objectives on an open-ended map while under constant attack from respawning enemies. The game provides a 'dial-a-war-crime' system for calling down airstrikes and support weapons, creating intense moments of gameplay. The speaker experimented with playing solo and found it challenging due to the game's design, which is better suited for cooperative play. The narrative and gameplay are praised for their consistency and the way they convey the game's themes, such as the futility of human conflict and the absurdity of war. However, the speaker also expresses frustration with the player interactions, categorizing them into three types: over-eager high-level players, clueless new players, and retaliatory players. Despite these issues, the speaker concludes by appreciating the game's design and storytelling, but ends on a note of disappointment, hinting at an issue that will be addressed in the addendum.

Second Wind
The majority of this video was createdĀ before Sony pulled that stunt last week withĀ Ā
the mandating Playstation account linking toĀ play Helldivers 2. Since the matter warrantsĀ Ā
mentioning, it will be addressed in a shortĀ addendum at the end of this review. Thank you.
[Intro Music]
Ah, I know what you're thinking. "Yahtzee,Ā voluntarily reviewing an online multiplayer game?Ā Ā
Has the seven-headed beast risen from the oceanĀ already? Or did every single player game in theĀ Ā
world spontaneously combust last weekend?" Well,Ā you're more likely thinking stuff like "what'sĀ Ā
for lunch," and "is he really still making theseĀ videos, talk about peaking too early." But yes,Ā Ā
unusually for me I've been playing HelldiversĀ 2. Not liking online multiplayer is somethingĀ Ā
I've long come to terms with about myself. IĀ prefer games with a rewarding narrative focus,Ā Ā
and live service multiplayer games are usuallyĀ emotionally numbing skinner box grinds,Ā Ā
and let's not forget that random human beingsĀ rank slightly lower on my preferred companionsĀ Ā
list than an uncontrolled electrical fire. ButĀ recently I was obliged to play a bit of HelldiversĀ Ā
2 alongside my Second Wind colleagues as partĀ of our 12 hour charity stream, so take note,Ā Ā
that's how you get me to play a live serviceĀ shooter these days: one, for charity, two,Ā Ā
let me do it with my mates so if the stress getsĀ too much I can shoot Nick in the face a few times.Ā Ā
Failing that I guess you could try holdingĀ a gun to the head of one of my loved ones,Ā Ā
but even then I'm gonna need to seeĀ the calibre before I make a decision.
To my surprise, I had rather a lot of fun playingĀ Helldivers 2, which made me suspicious. As I sayĀ Ā
I was playing with friends, and "fun with friends"Ā is bullshit praise. That just means you like yourĀ Ā
friends. Plenty of horrible things in thisĀ world are fun with friends. Like bad movies,Ā Ā
or pissing on a sleeping cat. But I wasĀ appreciating Helldivers 2 even when IĀ Ā
wasn't shooting Nick in the face, I mean, yes,Ā it's a skinner box live service grindathon,Ā Ā
but it doesn't pretend to be anything else. See,Ā other live services like Destiny 2 or any givenĀ Ā
MMORPG, always present themselves with a certainĀ big-bollocked lack of self-awareness. You are theĀ Ā
hero, you are fighting the important fight, gosh,Ā I can scarcely get past you in the corridor withĀ Ā
the sheer bigness of your bollocks, but thatĀ never comes across while actually playing theĀ Ā
game. While playing the game I feel like aĀ single ineffectual frozen pea in a great bigĀ Ā
bag of frozen peas, most of which are biggerĀ and have better gear, and completing missionsĀ Ā
doesn't feel like I'm achieving anythingĀ that isn't getting instantly reversed.
All of that is still true of Helldivers 2, butĀ the difference is, it makes sense in context,Ā Ā
too. The game kicks off with a veryĀ Starship Troopers-inspired - ooh,Ā Ā
if I minced these words any harder I could topĀ it with mashed potato and call it cottage pie.Ā Ā
It literally is Starship Troopers, okay?Ā A totalitarian future Earth fighting aĀ Ā
high-tech war against alien bugs on a distantĀ planet we've got no more business on than doesĀ Ā
a double decker bus in a swimming pool,Ā using bombastic state media to blind itsĀ Ā
citizens with promises of glory and appeals toĀ patriotism so it can have a neverending supplyĀ Ā
of dumb recruits to throw into the meat grinder.Ā "Rip off" is a harsh phrase but you know what,Ā Ā
considering the irony of Starship Troopers wentĀ over so many people's heads the first time,Ā Ā
probably wouldn't hurt to give it a secondĀ crack. So you go through about ten minutesĀ Ā
of training in which you shoot some aliens thatĀ have essentially been pinned to the floor, getĀ Ā
massively overpraised by a prerecorded voice thenĀ shot into space in the hope you'll actually takeĀ Ā
out a few of the fuckers before they dissembleĀ your protein for the brood maggots. But thisĀ Ā
is where we deviate a little from the StarshipĀ Troopers template, because when you arrive theĀ Ā
game goes "Hi! Here's a free spaceship just forĀ you. Go join a battle. It doesn't matter which."
While Starship Troopers is about a fascist stateĀ instigating forever war as a way to control itsĀ Ā
own population, Helldivers feels more likeĀ what happens when human society has run outĀ Ā
of shit to do. Clearly there's no scarcity ifĀ they're handing out free spaceships and canĀ Ā
drop limitless amounts of ammo and airstrikesĀ for any random soldier with enough remainingĀ Ā
fingers to work a touchtone phone, apparently theĀ human race is now just roaming the galaxy pickingĀ Ā
fights for want of something to do, achievingĀ bugger all of consequence except for killingĀ Ā
all the buggers. Feels weird to say, but I guessĀ my tolerance for live service grinds increasesĀ Ā
when I feel like the story isn't bullshitting me.Ā Thanks, Helldivers 2, in return I won't bullshitĀ Ā
you. I'm going to play your Skinner box grindathonĀ gameplay with a podcast on to keep my brain alive,Ā Ā
please extend my apologies to your music composersĀ and voice actors who spent all that time inĀ Ā
the studio trying to convincingly scream likeĀ they're getting impaled on a pedipalp. Pedipaled,Ā Ā
perhaps. And as a Skinner box grindathonĀ Helldivers 2 will certainly do the job.
You get inserted into an open-ended map with aĀ buffet of objectives to complete before makingĀ Ā
for the extraction point while getting harassedĀ by endlessly respawning enemies, and I quicklyĀ Ā
learned that relying exclusively on the gunsĀ you carry with you is an excellent way to haveĀ Ā
to spend every evening picking antennae out ofĀ your bumhole, and a smart player relies on callingĀ Ā
down airstrikes and support weapons with a ratherĀ neat little dial-a-war-crime system that createsĀ Ā
very effective moments of panicky desperationĀ as you attempt to calmly enter the code numberĀ Ā
for an orbital strike while fencing a forest ofĀ slashing monster claws with your one good leg.Ā Ā
So at first I was trying to see if HelldiversĀ 2 works as a single player game. Short answer,Ā Ā
no. Short, profane answer, fuck no. Oh, you canĀ certainly start a mission by yourself with randomĀ Ā
pubbies blocked but like an Alzheimer's patient atĀ a bukkake shoot you won't be able to get anythingĀ Ā
achieved before getting blindsided by anotherĀ dick. I tried dropping the difficulty down toĀ Ā
easy once I'd found a spare dummy to suck on, butĀ the eventual mission rewards were so insultinglyĀ Ā
small it felt like being given a nem-nem forĀ going poo-poos in the toilet like mummy asked.
And saving up to buy a new cape with twoĀ stripes instead of one isn't much of a wayĀ Ā
to track progress but it's all we've fucking got.Ā So I held my nose and tried playing with pubbies,Ā Ā
and swiftly learned that the other thing to beĀ said for playing with friends is that your friendsĀ Ā
actually talk to you, saying things like "enemiesĀ to the west" and "please stop shooting Nick inĀ Ā
the face." Pubbies, meanwhile, are here to makeĀ premium currency, not social connections, and willĀ Ā
fall into one of three categories: the massivelyĀ higher level twat who runs off to complete allĀ Ā
the side objectives by themselves with their fancyĀ pants high level airstrikes with rear spoilers andĀ Ā
fuzzy dice, the clueless twat who keeps callingĀ down airstrikes right on my previous body I'mĀ Ā
desperately trying to recover my decent equipmentĀ from, and the furious twat who keeps shooting meĀ Ā
in retaliation for calling down airstrikesĀ on their previous body they're desperatelyĀ Ā
trying to etc. So I doubt I'll play any moreĀ Helldivers 2 in my spare time, but damn it ifĀ Ā
I don't appreciate the tightness of its design andĀ the degree of immersion storytelling that conveysĀ Ā
its intended themes through gameplay. Namely thatĀ human beings suck ass, massacring aliens in theirĀ Ā
own environment is stupid and really hard, andĀ Nick's face makes very amusing noises when shot.
