never actually seen the original GT
opening
[Music]
thisle
here we go now a brand new
battle begins a new adventure for Goku
and his
friends step to The Grand Tour grand
tour tour to The Grand Tour Dragon Ball
GT son of a I haven't watched this
since uh the original tunami run I
didn't even watch all of it you brought
this up during the commentaries and
enough people were like yeah no do it do
it do it so
fine we watch Dragon Ball GT we're
watching I should say like we we just
watched the first three episodes one of
them twice yes because for all of you at
[Music]
home oh my God I forgot that Mr Popo
Japanese talks like this you know who
also has to gather the Dragon Balls my
mom I okay I was making an argument
early on saying like you know what we
have an English-speaking audience and I
I remember not necessarily fondly some
parts I remember fondly uh the dub of
Dragon Ball GT which is uh to me all of
the things that make it bad make it
charming and enjoyable so so that was
the angle I was coming from but you
said how do you not love this that shall
I count way okay so I wanted to
experience the series in its truest form
you know unadulterated by as much as
possible because with the which with the
original score without any
mistranslations because to be frank I'll
admit I have seen d a sub GT before I
was a child and I hated it and As I Grew
Older everything that I remembered from
it and everything that I saw from it I
was not a a fan so I decided that I was
going to give it a real Fair Shake watch
it beginning to end in Japanese
subtitled and really come up form my own
full opinion on GT that isn't informed
by when I was a child because I think
that's fair yeah no it's fair and
honestly there there's parts of it that
okay as somebody that only watched the
tsunami run oh yeah which is already
problem you you blew my mind very early
on when you mentioned fact that oh yeah
no they started on episode what 17 they
skipped 16 episodes of the anime and
just did like a bunch of like recut
stuff to fill in the blanks yeah so what
had happened was FUNimation uh I can't
remember the year that it was released I
think 2005 um yeah they were finally
bringing GT to America after Z was
ending and they had gotten the buzz the
feel that people weren't cute fans of GT
like in general let's be honest GT is
very different from the original Dragon
Ball or Dragon Ball Z but it is trying
to be a lot more like Original Dragon
Ball at the very start it wants to focus
on adventure it's much more
light-hearted there's less fighting so
yeah one one thing we noticed very early
on is that all of the characters seem to
have been scaled down significantly yeah
in terms of their power yeah FUNimation
saw that and they realized oh maybe
people don't want to watch this maybe
people don't want to watch this initi
IAL these initial 16 episodes which is
the Tour Part Grand Tour like cuz we've
uh so far watched through the first
three episodes and they just went into
space yeah like in in episode two at the
very end they get into space and those
first 16 episodes are a lot of them just
doing a bunch of like monster of the
week stuff from what I'm gathering cuz
when we were I this is the first time
I've ever seen the Dragon Ball GT
opening like the full song everything
like that that is amazing to me by the
way and well yeah I again the only
exposure I ever had to GT was Step Into
The Grand Tour Grand Tour Grand Tour
this is setting up for like a mystical
Journey that this like from what I
recall the show does not deliver on I
would I would love to see this you okay
you will see all of this and it's really
charming and you were like yeah no
that's what the first 16 episodes
are okay yeah so like I'm I'm actually
kind of down for that aspect of it but
it it it almost kind of like immediately
shows its ass uh with how like look we
just want to get to a story so
we're going to break a bunch of rules
and these Dragon Balls have always
existed deal with it yeah so if
if we can get into the like show proper
now yeah um the Poff gang finds the
Black Star Dragon Balls which which have
always existed back when commi and
Piccolo were the same dude Y and they
made Dragon Balls but they were
evil
they're even better they're the GT
Dragon Balls yeah GT stands for greater
and and they hid them deep deep within
the lookout which by the way how deep
also they're a top a bunch of skeletons
who are are those old popos what the
hell no no they aren't old popos they're
just where popo left his skeletons right
we we open up on like what is a middly
kind of a cool scene of Goku training
Uub and I guess they've just been at the
look out for 5 years actually I don't I
don't think they were technically at the
lookout I think they were just there for
his quote unquote graduation C his final
test where they decide to like break
[Music]
everything our popo wouldn't stand for
this which by the way is fantastic
because in the original Piccolo is
freaking the hell out over buo
destroying the lookout in
this wor Goku and Uub do it right away
and it wasn't until we rewatched through
in English that I realized wow Goku
isn't really taking this seriously cuz
he's just fighting UB at base level and
he's like yeah you're ready to go
kid buo was whooping your ass
as like as a Super Saiyan and you're
sitting here like okay oop you're good
bye yeah no no it's it's I don't believe
it I don't believe it you can't make me
believe it's immediately kind of a cool
looking it's it's a cool looking like
beam back and forth It's really short
but yeah it's a short but it's an
interesting fight and it was it was
definitely toy trying to be like don't
worry there's still action there's not
we'll we'll get to it in about 30
episodes or so maybe I don't know yeah I
well if FUNimation is anyone to go by
about 17 yeah um it's actually sort of
interesting because in these first three
episodes uh we're introduced to Pon yes
who really kind of feels upfront like
she's going to be action girl and it's
and it's bizarre the way we're
introduced to her she's out on a date
with a boy yeah she's out on a date with
a boy and it's nebulous how old she
really is here you ended up looking it
up right this takes place 5 years after
the end of Z 5 years after the end of Z
where she would have been like what
three or four at the end of Z five I
can't remember her actual age because
when it comes in in the show she looks
like she's somewhere like pre-teen 11 12
somewhere in that range which is
actually also another problem because
when the FUNimation dub originally came
out they said it was 10 years after the
end of Z which which yeah is kind of
wrong it's a mistake that you can make
and that doesn't bother me and at least
at that point it makes Pan about 14 so
the boy crazy nature of her that she
seems to be exhibiting kind of makes
sense to although like it's really her
being boy crazy is kind of just uh a
trait it's well I was going to say the
you know anime writing in the 1990s for
a young girl there's a lot of '90s stuff
going there's a lot of 90 stuff also I
hate how hard it is to just find the
Roshi's fresh prince of B air glasses oh
yeah that look is a look that is a bad
look actually I like why those glasses I
understand he he shows up in the city
for no reason it's immediately grabbing
asses the man knows what he's about man
casual sexual assault sure is funny
especially with his 80s
[Music]
Shades they even see even they find it
funny it's
Charming it's too for his penis to
really work so what harm is it it
definitely kind of seems like they were
trying to update everybody's look in
this and honestly 90% of the characters
just look worse I'm sorry everyone
everyone's designs trunks in the puke
green suit uh and then when he's not in
the puke green suit he's got the that's
got the gloves and the shorts and look I
wear shorts okay but he just he's not
they're not working they're not shorts
is a weird combo to begin with cuz like
what are you cold are you warm what's
happening uh but nobody suffers worse
than Vegeta who just went completely off
model there there's no way of talking
about this without talking about Vegeta
it's unfortunate because okay so
mustache weird thing in terms of the
production of GT is that the first
episode looks great fantastic art across
the board great animation second episode
immediately looks worse they had another
Studio working on it and it's not one of
their best Studios to be quite Frank
with you and that's the first time we
see Vegeta with a G haircut the
first time he shows up if you don't know
that's supposed to be Vegeta I don't
know how you assume that's Vegeta no it
honestly it makes you wonder if like Mr
are they trying to hide it or yeah well
no if you see it and you've never you
don't know it's Vegeta you wonder is
that Mr Satan's brother did Mr Satan
have a son that we didn't know about we
get introduced to Vegeta in this we
weird subplot where this these two guys
are trying to kidnap bra I cannot yeah I
cannot believe it's like you said by the
way one shot of bra we get a single shot
of bra in the first three episodes which
is nuts to me Vegeta just didn't give
enough by way that girl is
technically younger than pun I know
right but she like looks older maybe
like I don't know you think do you think
they pulled like a dragon balls thing
like Bulma did or it's like I want to
look 3 years older yeah they have a
child hither to unmentioned it's like
yeah whatever go away but yeah yeah like
you said it's insane that in a show that
is not based off a manga we have filler
yeah it's filler they have like the the
second episode is filler yeah it's
literally there's literally no purpose
to that entire suppl it does not fill
anything out I think what I think it was
was they were like okay we have Goku as
a kid we need we need some hygiene with
him as a kid cuz what happens is they
end up mistakenly grabbing Goku after
they mistake pan for bra but then pan
flies away and they end up hugging Goku
and he's like hey what's up and then
they just you know they take him out to
dinner and you know it's haha Goku ate
too much for them to spend and they keep
trying to make Ransom calls for Goku and
everyone's like it's admittedly kind of
a fun gag cuz bulma's like oh did he get
lost tell him to tell him to get over
here wait no you don't get it click and
then he calls Vegeta we have your Goku
my what what yeah you what what why
would I want him which by the way click
still weird to hear Vegeta he says Goku
Goku Goku there's a part of me that just
wants to be like he literally doesn't
know what that is just hang up is
that some kind of food hold on I'm busy
looking at my
mustache look I will say this honestly
it like as far as the filler of this
admittedly entirely filler series is it
it was cute at worst they're inoffensive
at best they're
[Music]
funny it's not even about the money
anymore that it's about the principal
it's about the principal a kidnapping
people used to respect the art oh my go
there's a scene first of all Grandpa
Satan A+ A+ no notes I am all about him
being doting Grandpa Satan yeah there's
this adorable scene with him and sitting
in a restaurant the waiter comes up he
sets this massive like ice cream parfit
in front of pan and a cup of coffee in
front of Satan and then he just he just
gets up and grabs the parfait and puts
the coffee in front of her it's it's
they they make no note of it it's just
like that one's supposed to be mine y
it's cute yeah the fact and and as a man
who loves his giant parfet I approve of
this and and the best part is like and
it's very in character for Pon which by
the way in the first two episodes I love
Pon I just do she's she's like I wasn't
a huge fan of like the oh my date
abandoned me again by the way weak man
very weak man who cannot handle a girl
who can candle armed robbers agreed yeah
but that being said while I absolutely
love Pon in those first two episodes
especially in this scene where she
drinks the coffee and it's too bitter
for
her like it's I love that I love the
fact that she's trying to be she wants
to be perceived as more adult than she
is but she's still a kid
yeah put a plant in front of it
something
yeah honestly those first two episodes
really nail that version of that part of
our character
unfortunately the moment at like at the
end of episode 2 and all of episode
three yeah cuz this entire time she's
like I want to go out into space with
you guys because uh you know the the
Black Star Dragon Balls as soon as the
wish is made uh which admittedly like
it's a fun gag where P off's like I just
wish you were TI like I wish you were a
kid you J you jerk like he's just
yelling at Goku this whole time it's
like I wish we could go back I wish you
could be a kid again so I could like at
least try and teach you a lesson and the
dragons massive ass red Shenron
yeah holy wow Shenron is huge
looking cool uh looking looking real
swole there just like all right Goku
tiny but then King Kai learns in heaven
oh yeah it's like uh yeah apparently the
world's going to blow up if you don't
find those again also they're scattered
throughout the Galaxy enjoy your
adventure oh yeah yeah King Kai learns
this which you mentioned in heaven so
yeah I guess he like asked around
there's Heavenly people out there
there's other guys so he asks around he
figures out that hey by the way turns
out if you don't collect those dragon
balls in the next year um Earth's going
to blow up yeah any any planet that the
wish is made on with those Dragon Balls
goes boom and so yeah they have to get
in the ship which they have to build a
ship and Pan's whole thing is I want to
go too I want to be seen as adult too I
I want to help I want to help which
that's great by the way I I just I got a
note just get the Earth Dragon Balls and
then wish wish the Black Star Dragon
Balls to Earth yeah weal we talked about
that while we were sitting there just
like wish all the Blackstar dragon balls
back to Earth just get the real dragon
balls yeah bing bing boom this is so
dumb but then you don't have a show I
know but like then we wouldn't have to
watch a
shows I hope we cut to that shot yeah
yeah no yeah yeah that's why they exist
but God see new format what do you think
anyway when pan immediately becomes
insufferable is when she God they
literally do the joke we did with Dr
brief I mean I know this happened before
but is immediately it immediately
reminded us when when Videl says Don't
touch don't touch that one that's the
start button oh good you've now told her
how to start the
ship don't touch the start button that's
the start
button don't press the start
button so Goku and Trunks get on the
ship goten's going to be joining them
but before Goten can get on the ship pan
presses the start button and they blast
themselves off into space and since pan
uh in a gag was set up earlier kicked
the ship out of frustration broke a
piece off of it they lost a part of
their ship and they go hurdling off into
space and pan immediately becomes the
bitchiest worst character okay yeah and
two things by the way
one why did they have to sabotage the
ship they were already going to have to
go to a bunch of different planets I I
don't know I I honestly I thought I
thought it was kind of a cute gag cuz
like she kicked the inside of the ship
and no no it's it's not it's not that
it's not a cute gag but unfortunately
you know what it does do it sets up that
uh they end up on a planet which I am
okay I literally don't remember this I
bet you dicks for dollars the planet
they end up crashing On's got a dragon
ball on it which is going I mean because
what happens is and and this is another
bit of like FR like narrative
frustration they end up crash landing on
this planet this Merchant planet of like
I mean I guess downtrodden people who
are who immediately who are yeah so uing
is suffering the
uh super capitalism yeah clearly they've
made first contact with other species
because they don't care that there's a
bunch of aliens walking around oh yeah
the moment aliens show up on the planet
they swarm them and and try to sell them
things which by the way uh apparently
they've got this alien money they have
the currency cuz they were able to pay
for the stuff that they got and they
were able to get like a hotel room and
like assumedly pay for the they
racked up in there like it's it's it's
like super capitalism is basically the
joke of the planet yes like that's the
entire joke wait hold on so what's the
how do they have the money how did they
pay I'm so confused where did you get
the money
[Music]
robbery jokes on them Goku could
probably get his money's worth He
bankrupts the entire Place eats the
entire economy
[Music]
dry
all right well they have 10 minutes to
resolve
this that'll do yeah hell yeah yeah
I hear your capitalism is pretty strong
but are they as strong as my fist you
cannot defend against Goku's communist
fists H and also there's a dictator that
Goku is going to go beat up yes but they
also meet giru who eats the dragon radar
yeah which you know that that makes
sense like like like robot on the planet
and eats technology to reforge itself I
I can buy it and you need a mascot
character honestly like guu as like G's
design G's like part in the plot I I
remember not hating even though he's
kind of like one of those he does feel
like a mascot he is a mascot character
he's AB I mean he shows up in the uh
what do you call it like the little in
like the cut to ad break little
stitchins yeah and before he's in the
show it's like I'm imagine that Japanese
audience being like who that but so
I it's like we said pan in those first
two episodes they set her up to be real
cool and then she in immediately in
episode three she's the worst she is
immediately being really whining about
everything it's like Grandpa this is
your fault like you stowed away
yeah and Goku even says it yeah that
entire segment where she's blaming Goku
her like trying to clean up around the
ship and inconveniencing them just
basically whining about everything and
it and and like yo why why it makes you
look back at what they did in superhero
and be like man that's that's right that
is the correct way of doing this that
see it's sort of interesting because at
the very beginning of GT I was like you
know what this does sort of feel like
like an older version of that pun that's
why I was into it I was like yeah she
wants to be an adult and she is strong
and she seems like and she seems kind of
how do I put this like I I really hope
they come back around to it I I doubt
that they do but I hope they bring it
around somewhere like I hope there's a
character Arc to this yeah it's just it
kind of felt like they were honestly and
I know this kind of sounds dumb but it
seemed like they were trying to make a
Goku 2.0 in the superhero movie um but
have her be kind of smart like one like
honestly a mixture of Goku and Gohan
could be a fantastic character through
Pon but in this
instead we just kind of get a oh man I'm
not looking forward to the next couple
episodes with Pon because I know that
she gets worse I remember that she just
sort of gets worse in the next couple of
episodes as somebody that like you know
was exposed to the FUNimation dub like I
I remember like a few things I remember
the par para Brothers I remember General
dildo I remember uh baby I remember
Super 17 and Piccolo being trapped in
hell and uh
the shadow dragons yeah I remember a lot
of things but there are funner details
that I have kind of like lost over the
years yeah pan is one of those
characters that turned into a background
character for me that I I have like
little to no recollection of and I feel
like that bodess poorly because yes
because after after like the first half
of the series basically it just becomes
the Goku show again yeah it does and
it's which I get it he's your most
marketable character she sticks around
she's still prominent throughout the
shadow dragon stuff she's still there
yeah but it's the Goku show yeah because
he's got to get his win back brother
Jack because like the initial idea with
Dragon Ball GT was age them all like age
Goku down pair him with Trunks and Pon
so Pon can kind of be on the same level
as Goku but yeah no that doesn't that
just doesn't last and trumps was like
was he a popular character in Japan like
throughout the cell I'm going to assume
he was he he must have been like he he
was he was a huge fan favorite here in
America despite the fact that he
literally up everything he did
yeah but the this trunks is not any
character really it's kind of ridiculous
like the first thing we see of trunks
he's wearing this gross kind of like
vomit suit which I don't think
necessarily looks that bad compared to
everything else in the show but uh all
the girls are faing on him like d dude
could slay if he's like you know looking
for pulls dud pull he absolutely pull uh
but he's the president of capsule Corp
apparently at this point he's why would
he ever see he he hates the job he
hates it I don't know if like
his mom is making him do it or what but
he show he goes up to his office there's
paperwork slammed on his desk and he
just pieces the out they have this
they have this little mini window that's
on the floor like what is this thing
it's like 3T tall and and it's like at
Ground
yeah it's just it's walks over to it
just yeah just like zooms out which
apparently he does this a lot yeah cuz
his like hot assistant's like G that
jerk left again yeah
which this trunks isn't a character this
trunks is like the most milk toast
trunks that there's ever been he's the
trunks that had this he's a trunks
that's known very little hardship and
also like he's not as cool as uh as
original Future Trunks he's not as like
cheeky or as mischievous as he was as
kid trunks now he's just a dude and that
I feel like that's just going to be his
character moving forward which okay look
I get it they're basically a monai trio
in a way they need a straight man so
they can have like oh you know the the
rambunctious girl and and the and the
stupid boy and like he's the dad to the
like basically playing the Father Figure
to the both of them trying to keep
things from going too far off the he's
the responsible one yeah which cool all
right but why in the world would you
choose trunks for that you know who
would have been great Piccolo I
wholeheartedly agree oh yeah okay yes
having Piccolo there in like first of
all cool now you have a character like
who's very different and he's very
serious yeah like he he he puts up with
no he's not in the show for
forever and let me tell you next time he
shows up is the worst I I believe you
because I only remember the part of him
going to hell yeah is that the next time
he shows up oh no so yeah look the
reason we want to watch through all of
GT and I know that we've kind of been
all over the place in this we didn't
exactly go structured I promise it'll
probably be more Str it'll be a bit more
structured moving forward but this being
the first one it's it's it's hard not to
go from like where where we were when we
first saw it what we knew then and what
we're dealing with now I'm watching
episodes that I've never seen yeah and
we just came we literally watched it and
then sat down to do this yeah the
visuals for the closings are
stupendous like just gorgeous shot after
gorgeous shot like the opening look
great yeah like honestly it makes me
really sad because the openings the
opening and the endings are all bangers
phenomenal like the every single ending
is better than every ending that Dragon
Ball has ever had except for forano so
this is all fresh in our minds just
buing around yeah I I I've never seen
these episodes I've seen parts of these
episodes cuz I remember Goku being
turned into a tiny boy I remember them
building a spaceship I remember pan
launching it before they could but I
don't remember anything about capitalism
planet and that's a two-parter i it's
more than a two-parter Jesus
um sit tight for the next couple of
episodes cuz it it's about to get weird
and wild uh but yeah we wanted to do
this because again we spent a lot of
time talking about GT in the past
on GT yeah um talking about how
it's a lot of NE ideas done poorly you
can see you can see any of our DB sers
where we even mention GT which is few
and far between admittedly but this is
again like I said this is the first time
as as somebody who honestly when I was
younger I would not trust my opinion on
most things that's why I'm looking
forward to it as as an adult being able
to look at it much more objectively yeah
I I I will say I'm looking at this from
the lens of like I know if I was
watching this as a teen who had or a
pre-teen I guess I can't
remember uh who had just finished
watching Z I know watching a bunch of
this would been like this
what's happening I want to watch you you
hockey show now you never saw the
original trailer they put out did you
probably not funimation's original
trailer is sorry guys but spicy
[Music]
The Grand Tour grand grand tour and it's
like and that's how they introduced
their version by saying hey the old one
sucks watch our version with cool rap
and awful background music it's it's
like that though that's like we we
talked about this it's it's the it's
Charming bad it is charm at this point
at this point it's Charming bad back
then I'm guessing it was just bad but
yeah well looking at it through that
lens now it is incredible to watch what
they were trying desperately to do with
Dragon Ball GT the the background score
is done by Mark menah the guy who did
the music for the either the Jimmy
Neutron movie or show I think it was the
movie Son let me tell you a little bit
about Rockets they're big people things
son you you just can't go around playing
with big people fiery flying uh things
because that's what Rockets are and it
is nothing it is not a score it is
somebody on a guitar just kind of
ripping through the episode it's very
unbelievably boring yeah cuz we went
back and we watched uh we literally
watched episode one twice in a row in
Japanese and then dubbed so uh do I have
to go back to school now you never went
to
school yeah good oh God he watched he
watched Evolution oh no and uh while I I
don't have the same hatred for some of
the performances that you do in the
English dub Again part of why I have any
fond memories of GT is some of those
like dubb isms some of the odd
readings some of the like weird
uh but the music is admittedly much
better in the Japanese I know I've been
kind of shitty about the falconer team
score but I think I have also over the
last several years shown that there's I
have much appreciation for its best
stuff like the vulcano's team put
together some really good music there's
some of it that really hits cell's theme
specifically the perfect one Gohan's
anger which you know that's Gohan angers
is good it's like there's there's good I
have a I have a deep appreciation for
Hell's Bells yes yes there's none of
that in the GT dub score not a little
bit there's nothing there there's
there's nothing it's like Nathan
Johnson's score although even Nathan
Johnson's score has like uh some love by
the way that's the score that they did
for the uncut uh Original saan season
like back when they were uh I I would
have absolutely no memory of this Nathan
Johnson is uh our attorney general he I
can't remember he's like yeah no no he I
can't remember what he's he went from
making the score but he's in public
office now yeah he's in public office
now it's nuts even that score I would
rather listen to than this it is so
boring and so that's why like that's why
I had to be like no guy we can't watch
the dub I want to try and like GT I
understand I I understand but it it'll
be interesting moving forward we're
going to we're going to keep taking like
little bits and pieces looks at this uh
in this odd little retrospective
I I don't know man this is it's it's
different it's different hey so like
this is exciting because genuinely I
can't wait for you to see the crazy
weird that they do in this this
is the this is the part that I'm kind of
looking forward to the most the like the
actual Adventure monster of the week
what the before it becomes
Dragon Ball Z but worse
yeah yeah know it's uh I'm sorry I know
it kind of sounds like I'm setting
myself up for failure I know there's a
lot of people back at home who are big
GT fans who are actually looking forward
to us giving it a chance and I promise I
promise I am hey I'm I'm already
speaking the Praises of the things that
I enjoy yeah I mean again I lik to those
first two episodes I there were a lot of
jokes that actually worked for me we're
going to keep watching I'm going to keep
I'm going to keep having an open mind
I'm going to uh enjoy seeing your
response to some of these things as well
like and yeah I hope that you join us
for more episodes of this because I'm
excited so we'll catch you guys next
time on
gtfs oh God I hate
it oh this is why I do outros
oh
