Transcripts

00:00

- [Falcon] Welcome back to another episode

00:01

of "Before You Buy,"

00:02

the show where we give you some straight up gameplay

00:04

and our first impressions of the latest games releasing.

00:07

So "Fallout 76," huh?

00:09

People hated this game back when it came out,

00:12

and I was one of them.

00:13

In fact, I kind of hated it for a long time.

00:16

To Bethesda's credit, they didn't abandon it though.

00:19

They stuck with it.

00:20

And with the surprisingly good "Fallout" TV show

00:23

driving interest to the franchise again,

00:25

more people have been trying the game

00:27

than they have in years.

00:28

And what better time than now

00:29

for us to finally dive back into the game

00:31

and see how much it's improved.

00:32

Like, to be completely honest here,

00:35

I gave up on "Fallout 76"

00:37

basically immediately after launch.

00:39

I turned it off, I uninstalled it,

00:41

and I actively ignored the game for a long time.

00:44

Whenever it was brought up or mentioned,

00:46

I made fun of it because it was bad.

00:48

But in the interim of me not playing the game,

00:51

Bethesda continued working on it.

00:53

There's been 18 major updates,

00:55

number 19 is releasing in June,

00:58

and they aren't just basic additions.

01:00

They've pretty much overhauled entire segments of the game.

01:03

The Wastelands update from April 14th, 2020

01:07

added actual NPCs and a new main story quest, which is huge.

01:11

Keep in mind, the original game had no NPCs at all

01:16

other than some robots and a super mutant,

01:19

which, if you understand how NPCs are in these games,

01:23

those are not NPCs, despite them technically being NPCs.

01:27

In 2022, they added expeditions,

01:30

which are more linear challenges in far-off locations

01:33

you can take on with a team or by yourself.

01:35

And now in 2024, they fully expanded that system

01:38

by giving you a new city to explore with its own quests

01:41

and side quests in Atlantic City.

01:44

If you're only experience with "Fallout 76"

01:46

was playing it back when it came out,

01:48

then what we're looking at today

01:50

is basically an entirely new game.

01:52

Almost everything about it has been rebalanced,

01:54

expanded and improved.

01:56

In 2024, it is a much better game than it once was.

02:00

Is it enough to elevate it to actually being a good game?

02:03

Well, that's kind of what we're here to find out.

02:05

The important thing to keep in mind about "Fallout 76"

02:09

is that even with the new bells and whistles,

02:11

at its core, this is still the same game,

02:14

and it still has a lot of the same problems

02:16

it had at launch.

02:17

Enemies are still dumb as hell.

02:19

Many areas can look butt ugly,

02:21

even with your settings set up to max,

02:23

and the server-based nature of the gameplay

02:26

leads to a lot of compromises

02:27

that would not be there if you were playing "Fallout 4."

02:30

Also, it's a live-service game,

02:32

so there's tons of microtransactions.

02:35

And I'm not saying this lightly,

02:38

there are so many microtransactions (laughs) in this game.

02:41

But the overall experience is so much better now

02:44

than it was when it first came out.

02:45

The weight of a lot of stuff has been cut down,

02:47

so you can actually carry some things with you.

02:50

Ammos more plentiful.

02:51

There are storage chests all over the place.

02:54

And while it still costs caps to fast-travel,

02:56

there's a lot of places

02:57

where you can fast-travel to for free.

03:00

So that's not really a problem anymore.

03:02

Having actual quests and NPCs

03:04

makes the world feel a lot more vibrant too.

03:07

I know they added in all this stuff

03:09

for the first time like four years ago,

03:10

but it's pretty new to me.

03:12

I didn't play this game four years ago,

03:14

I played it at launch, and that's it.

03:16

The actual quests don't have the depth

03:19

of something from "Fallout: New Vegas," per se,

03:22

but you can make dialogue choices,

03:24

and what you say depends on your special stats.

03:26

There's actually some choices to make.

03:28

It almost feels like a proper "Fallout" game.

03:31

The new area of Atlantic City isn't particularly big,

03:35

it's mostly just split between three smallish areas.

03:37

But the new quest they've added recently are fun to explore

03:40

even if they're, like I said, a little railroaded

03:42

and basic compared to this sort of thing

03:44

in other "Fallout" games.

03:46

It's just kind of tricky getting to this place too.

03:49

To access Atlantic City,

03:50

you have to unlock expeditions first,

03:52

which requires you to go to the Whitespring Refuge

03:56

and help out with Responders faction.

03:58

And, I mean, they're relatively simple,

04:00

but there's a few side quests you gotta do.

04:02

Even here, some of the flaws of "Fallout 76"

04:05

still shine through.

04:06

Like there's a person who wants you to donate

04:09

50 pieces of molded plastic.

04:11

So I check my inventory, I've got five pieces

04:13

of that specific item.

04:15

But, oh, wait, they say molded plastic,

04:17

but they actually just mean plastic.

04:19

So why didn't they just say plastic?

04:21

'Cause this is pretty simple.

04:22

I mean, that's a needlessly confusing thing,

04:26

especially for all of us who have been kind of conditioned

04:28

to the specificity of "Fallout" stuff,

04:31

and that's kind of "Fallout 76" overall.

04:33

It's still a little sloppy,

04:35

even with all the updates it's gotten.

04:36

Oddly enough, almost none of the quests in Atlantic City

04:39

actually start there.

04:41

The main line quest begins in Appalachia,

04:44

and not even in the Whitespring refuge.

04:46

So if you actually want to experience the main story

04:48

of this place, you need to look around a little.

04:50

It's sort of a pain to actually start up,

04:52

but the quests in Atlantic City are worth doing,

04:54

even if it's not quite as intriguing as I'd hoped.

04:58

The game doesn't allow for a lot of the more complex

05:00

simulations of previous games,

05:02

so you get weird situations like this part

05:04

where enemies go hostile on you in a scripted event,

05:07

but nobody else in the area reacts.

05:09

You can kill the boss of a faction,

05:11

and other than the guys that are programmed to attack you,

05:14

all the other guys who are enemies kind of just don't care.

05:17

"Fallout 76" just isn't as immersive an RPG

05:20

as previous "Fallouts."

05:21

Like, it lets you do dumb stuff

05:23

like re-spawn in the same room

05:25

and plink away at the boss until they're dead,

05:27

just running away and automatically getting a reward.

05:30

Like, it's video gamey in a way

05:32

that other entries in the series aren't.

05:34

And a lot of that comes down to the compromises

05:36

they have to make by having "Fallout 76" be a shared world.

05:40

That's the issue with the game that just, it can't be fixed.

05:43

You don't get the basic unique enemy compositions

05:45

of other games, instead, "Fallout 76"

05:47

just randomly spawns enemies that have two basic states,

05:51

they try to attack you up close

05:52

or they stand in place and shoot you.

05:54

That's about it.

05:55

The actual exploration can be pretty satisfying,

05:58

you know, just because of the excellent world design.

06:01

But the way enemies work is just never gonna not feel

06:05

artificial and distracting to me.

06:07

The actual stories here aren't anything

06:09

to write home about either.

06:11

There's none of the nuance of "Fallout: New Vegas"

06:13

with these Atlantic City gangsters.

06:15

They're pretty much exactly what they appear to be,

06:17

and the writing came off kind of flat honestly.

06:19

The locations and scenarios, they're interesting,

06:22

but the characters and dialogue don't make it pop

06:24

like the best "Fallout" quests.

06:26

Atlantic City looks and sounds great

06:28

for a new area in "Fallout 76," at least.

06:32

It's got a jazzy soundtrack,

06:33

it's got moody, dense locations.

06:36

There's some pretty great spots

06:37

to just stop and explore this place,

06:39

like the Aquarium of the Atlantic.

06:41

It's just a great looking place.

06:42

"Fallout 76" is clearly showing its age these days,

06:45

but the game still has some

06:46

of the best ambient storytelling in the entire franchise.

06:49

Some of the new enemies though

06:51

are really like extremely annoying, like this swamp thing

06:55

that automatically restores its health at random.

06:57

If you have fire, it's fine.

06:59

If you don't, it sucks.

07:00

It's great to have actual MPCs and quests

07:02

and dialogue and everything.

07:04

So the Atlantic City expansion

07:06

is a great free addition of the game,

07:08

but the real strength of "Fallout 76"

07:10

lies in the open world,

07:11

and that's why the 19th expansion of the game,

07:13

the titled Skyline Valley's,

07:15

probably the most exciting addition to me.

07:17

This update is coming to the full game in June,

07:19

but you could play it on the public test server now.

07:21

They put it up on the 18th.

07:23

It adds an entire new region to the game,

07:26

bringing the total number to seven.

07:28

The game's added new locations before,

07:29

but this is the first time they've added an entire region.

07:32

And there is a lot here, including an entirely new vault,

07:35

which is always fun to explore in these games.

07:37

There's more than 30 points of interest in this area,

07:39

which is, I mean, really, really good.

07:41

This is what I'm here for in these games.

07:42

Just wandering around and finding interesting stuff,

07:44

that's what this update's about.

07:46

I'm digging the atmosphere of this place too.

07:48

The red lighting in the distance

07:50

really gives it a kind of final area type vibe.

07:52

It looks dangerous, and while I haven't gotten a chance

07:54

to spend a lot of time here,

07:56

I'm really liking everything I'm seeing so far.

07:59

There's a lot about "Fallout 76"

08:00

I've really grown to appreciate.

08:02

But if there's one thing that hit me

08:04

like a bucket of cold water when I started it up,

08:06

it's the live-service stuff.

08:07

Right when you load up the game,

08:09

you're really getting bombarded with ads for "Fallout."

08:11

First, the subscription service,

08:13

the new stuff you could buy at the Atomic Store.

08:16

All this, it all takes me right out of the gameplay,

08:18

and it never goes away.

08:19

At least the game gives you lots of ways to earn atoms.

08:23

Like players that focus on doing daily missions

08:25

get showered in them,

08:26

but it all feels really out of place in a "Fallout" game.

08:29

That sense of lonely exploration is ruined

08:31

when you get a reminder on the screen about new events

08:34

and other crap like that.

08:36

And yeah, you can turn a lot of this UI stuff off

08:38

in the options, but it's a design that it feels

08:41

fundamentally incompatible with "Fallout."

08:43

That's my biggest problem with the game,

08:45

and something a bunch of content updates

08:47

can never truly fix.

08:48

As a live-service game, I would call it above average.

08:51

Like, it's better than most live service games.

08:54

Like, if you're going into this thing with no expectations

08:57

and aren't deliberately comparing it

08:58

to other "Fallout" games,

09:00

there's not a whole lot to complain about.

09:03

I mean, not stuff that you're not gonna see

09:05

in another game anyway.

09:07

But once you do compare it to "Fallout: New Vegas"

09:10

or "Fallout 3," or even "Fallout 4,"

09:13

it's missing a lot of that "Fallout" special sauce.

09:16

I mean, we've been talking about this for a while now.

09:18

It's obviously not all bad.

09:20

There's a lot of good here.

09:22

This is easily one of the best, if not the best open worlds

09:25

the "Fallout" series has ever seen.

09:27

Like, there's just a ton of points of interests

09:30

and unique little things, details, elements.

09:34

Like the school announcements.

09:35

- [Announcer] Hello, students.

09:37

Watoga High School is here for you.

09:40

- [Falcon] They go that extra mile

09:41

to make every location feel unique.

09:43

Like, all that effort though, and you're still just fighting

09:46

completely brainless zombies most of the time

09:48

who just spawn out of nowhere

09:50

and glitch out when they die.

09:51

That's the problem.

09:52

The quests and MPCs are huge,

09:54

and obviously make the game a lot better,

09:57

but their implementation feels kind of half-baked at times.

09:59

And the Quest design is more limited

10:01

than what you'd see in other games, obviously.

10:03

Choices are mostly relegated to obvious binary choices,

10:06

and they're lacking in nuance,

10:08

and that's kind of what "Fallout" is known for.

10:10

There's also weird stuff.

10:11

The expeditions are weird.

10:13

Getting to Atlantic City

10:14

feels like a vestigial system of some kind.

10:17

You have to go into the Expeditions menu and select a zone,

10:19

but now there's a dropdown menu

10:21

that you can explore instead of doing the expedition.

10:23

It's weird, awkward,

10:25

and a lot of the post game additions

10:27

are awkward in this same way.

10:29

As free updates to a 6-year-old game,

10:31

it's hard to complain about too much of this stuff

10:33

because it overall does make the experience a lot better.

10:36

If you're like me, bought the game back at release,

10:38

I would even say even with all of the complaining,

10:41

I'd recommend jumping back in,

10:43

especially in June with the Skyline update.

10:46

There's just so much stuff in the game now.

10:48

The actual experience of playing

10:49

is a lot smoother than it was.

10:51

Even with all of the problems,

10:53

I'm a lot more positive about "Fallout 76" overall in 2024.

10:57

It's not a perfect "Fallout" game, obviously.

10:59

It's compromised in a lot of ways,

11:02

but the parts that work, like the exploration,

11:04

they really work.

11:04

And seeing the setting of Appalachia, it's great.

11:08

It can occasionally look quite beautiful.

11:10

I don't know that I'd recommend

11:11

buying the game at full price.

11:12

There's too many microtransactions

11:14

and live-service crap to justify that.

11:16

But at a discount, I think there's more than enough here

11:18

to keep a "Fallout" fan entertained for quite a while.

11:20

All it took was, you know, six years of continuous updating,

11:23

and now "Fallout 76" is a good game.

11:26

Don't think it's a great game,

11:27

but if you accept what this game is and what it isn't,

11:30

I do think they've ultimately turned this one around.

11:32

That's all for today.
