Two victims.

At least a few hours. - OK, all right.
So we definitely need to talk to him.
âȘ
How many shots?
- So far, we've collected four 9-millimeter casings.
- OK.
- We definitely don't want any crime like this
in the French Quarter.
Crowds everywhere.
Anybody could've been hit by a stray bullet.
- The good news is, this is the 8th District,
Bourbon Street area.
There's cameras all over this place.
So we'll probably get some footage
to get a better account of what occurred today.
âȘ
narrator: While the team waits for the bars to reopen
to get access to the cameras,
they get a lead.
- Mm-hmm.
narrator: Patrol has a witness
who was with the victims.
- Cool. That's good news.
narrator: She'll be transported to Homicide.
- We're gonna talk to that person.
Maybe they could shed a little more light
on what happened tonight.
âȘ
Where were y'all at?
- Who was fighting?
narrator: She says the surviving victim
got into a fight with a man outside the bar.
narrator: She says the deceased victim, Bruce,
broke up the fight,
and the man who started it then walked away.
- And what happened after that?
narrator: She says her boyfriend and Bruce
left ahead of her.
- Did you actually see the shooting?
[suspenseful music]
âȘ
narrator: 3:30 a.m.

narrator: Police and EMS respond...
[sirens wailing]
And find a car backed over a pole
at the end of a driveway.
Inside is a man,
shot dead.
[dramatic music]
âȘ
- It looks like he just crashed.
narrator: Detective Mark Kennedy
has been with Homicide for ten years.
He will lead the investigation.
- Guy's dead in the driver's seat.
- OK.
âȘ
We'll go through his pockets.
Hopefully he has some ID on him.
âȘ
narrator: 44-year-old Vallon Broadus
leaves behind seven children.
He was an accomplished athlete
who attended Northeastern State University
on a track scholarship.
âȘ
- He's got a close pattern of rounds in the chest.
Another close round in the windshield.
âȘ
- The shotgun.
âȘ
- Here's a phone.
We're gonna want that.
- Can see the skid marks where he's been in reverse.
Obviously, he's backed over that pole
at a pretty fast rate.
- Hmm.
âȘ
âȘ
- Could be the suspect hunkered down in there.
âȘ
[knocking at door]
- Tulsa Police.
âȘ
- I got the hallway from the bathroom.
- Tulsa Police. Is anyone here?
âȘ
- Tulsa Police. Is anyone here?
âȘ
- Looks like somebody left here in a hurry.
âȘ
narrator: In the living room...
narrator: The team finds a live video feed
of the driveway where the victim was shot.
âȘ
Did you see the pistol on the dryer?
âȘ
- Jesus Christ.
That thing is still locked back and ready to roll.
âȘ
- All right, we're out.
- Right now, it's kind of a big mystery.
âȘ
Trying to figure out who lives here,
'cause I think whoever lives here obviously left
and knows something about this.
We're gonna go to the office,
try to do a little intel work.
âȘ
I need to start me some coffee.
[cell phone ringing]
narrator: Three hours after the murder...
[cell phone ringing]
Someone calls the victim's cell phone.
[cell phone ringing]
- Hello?
- Yeah, who is this?
narrator: The caller says she is Vallon's fiancée.
- All right, I want to come talk to you.
- Bye-bye.
Hey, can you roll with me?
Talk to the girlfriend.
Gonna be a death notification kind of a deal.
âȘ
âȘ
How are you?
I'm Detective Kennedy with Tulsa Police.
If we can go in here and talk real quick.
[somber music]
âȘ
What time did he leave here?
- OK, tell me about Megan.
- Sounds like she knows what's going on.
- Yeah.
âȘ
- The main things we need to do right now
is we need to find Megan.
She sublets that house.
narrator: The team already reached out to the man
who rents the house
where Vallon was found dead.
- He gave me her full name.
- She knows something.
- Are there traces of her?
- This is her. She got a warrant.
narrator: Kennedy calls a number listed
for Megan's mother.
[line trills]
- Yes?
- My name is Detective Mark Kennedy
with Tulsa Police Homicide.
Have you talked to your daughter?
- Yes.
- When did you talk to her?
- This morning.
She called me, frantic.
She's on the run.
She kept saying, "Mom, I can't say too much.
"Just watch the news, but I promise you, Mom,
"I did not do it,
but I know who did."
âȘ
- You know where she's at now?
- No.
- All right, no problem. Thank you.
âȘ
- I'm Detective Kennedy.
What I want to do-- when you call her,
put it on speaker and just talk to her.
[line trilling]
- Megan?
- Uh-huh.
- Are you OK?
- Who are you with?
- Where are you?
âȘ
narrator: In the New Orleans shooting
that left Bruce Tims Jr. dead
and his friend wounded,
Detective Rayell Johnson needs to know
if a woman who was with them
got a look at the shooter.
âȘ
- Oh?
- Anything else that you could think of that could help us out?
- All right.
âȘ
Hopefully, the surviving victim
got a good look at the guy he was fighting,
'cause most likely, that's gonna be our perpetrator,
so when he gets out of the hospital,
we all go back and interview him.
âȘ
narrator: Ten hours in,
Johnson meets up with Detective Bruce Brueggeman
in the French Quarter
to try and get video.
- OK.
And this is where the whole fight took place here,
right in between these two poles right here.
There's a video camera right there on that wall.
âȘ
âȘ
- Your manager's around the corner
at their second store.
She's coming here right now to meet me.
narrator: Detectives gather video from several cameras
facing the crime scene.
- Right now, we're gonna head back to headquarters,
see what we get.
âȘ
The Last Call.
That's the bar where, supposedly, we had the fight at.
If I could get the guy he was fighting,
then that'd be my possible perpetrator.
There we go.
That's our surviving victim right here.
narrator: As the surviving victim exits the bar,
a man wearing a hat sprays him with mace.
- Oh.
âȘ
[dramatic music]
âȘ
- [sighs] Wow.
âȘ
So we got the deceased victim, Bruce.
âȘ
OK, you can see him right here.
He's rushing in to break up the fight.
Wow.
âȘ
So we see the girl that was with the perpetrator
who started the fight.
Supposedly, this whole thing started over a girl,
so we need to find out who she is.
âȘ
narrator: Rayell continues to scour the footage.
- OK.
Here we go. That's what I'm looking at.
narrator: An hour after the fight...
- Oh.
So he runs up, shoots at the two of them.
âȘ
Another shot goes off.
He runs right here.
narrator: The video shows both victims
getting shot in the street.
Bruce then runs
and collapses on the sidewalk.
- Unfortunately, the video is so dark,
you really can't even tell if that's the same guy
that this black victim got in a fight with.
narrator: As onlookers try to help Bruce...
- That's her right there.
narrator: Johnson spots the woman
who was with the possible suspect.
- That's the one that was with--
wow.
We got the same female.
She walks right by our deceased victim
while he's on the ground.
She's on the phone with somebody.
We got to find her.
âȘ
narrator: But first,
the surviving victim is out of surgery
and finally able to talk.
âȘ
- He was very helpful.
He told me that the same guy he was fighting with
walks up the street, starts shooting at him
and the deceased victim.
Awesome news.
Also informed me that the girl who was with him--
her name is Aja.
Gave me a phone number, which is gonna be key.
But is she an accomplice,
or does she want to be a witness?
It's up to her.
Definitely got some wheels here.
[suspenseful music]
âȘ
narrator: 36 hours in,
Johnson looks up Aja.
âȘ
- OK.
âȘ
I'm about to...give Aja a call
and see if she'll come in and come talk to me.
[line trilling]
- The number you dialed is not a working number.
- Daah. - Please check the number
and dial again.
- Maybe she changed her number
to elude talking to me.
âȘ
Most current address I'm seeing for her is one in Slidell.
Maybe I can get out and talk with her.
âȘ
- Like "The Walking Dead."
- Yeah, it is.
Good thing is, we got a full tank of gas.
âȘ
- Uh-huh.
âȘ
- How you doing?
Does Aja stay here?
- You know her boyfriend?
- What's his name?
âȘ
- OK, do you know a last name on Brandon?
- We really need to speak to her.
Thank you.
âȘ
narrator: In the first 48,
New Orleans Homicide responded to the shooting of two men
in the French Quarter;
learned that deceased victim Bruce Tims Jr.
was trying to protect the surviving victim;
discovered video of the surviving victim
fighting with the suspect;
and ID'd a woman, Aja, who was with him.
âȘ
- Just got home, get a phone call.
It's Aja.
She says she's on her way.
[cell phone rings]
Hello?
narrator: While waiting for Aja to arrive...
- Can you get me a picture with, like, a real name?
narrator: The case takes a turn.
- That was one of the detectives in 8th District.
He said he had a CI gave him a call,
who possibly has a picture
and a name on the suspect.
âȘ
Brandon Guidry.
narrator: 31-year-old Brandon Guidry
has a conviction for illegal carrying of a weapon.
- Yeah, I think that's our man.
Grab a seat over there.
narrator: Moments later...
âȘ
- So I'm gonna show Aja a picture of Brandon Guidry
and she's gonna tell me who that is.
âȘ
narrator: In Tulsa,
Detective Mark Kennedy is investigating
the murder of 44-year-old Vallon Broadus.
Now he needs to track down the woman
who Vallon was going to meet
at the time of his death.
âȘ
- Where are you?
âȘ
- Have you talked to the police at all?
- OK, I love you.
- All right, ma'am, thank you. - Thank you.
- Appreciate your time. You take care.
- Have a safe day. - You too.
âȘ
narrator: Four hours later,
Megan decides to come forward.
- I hate to be cynical, but I think I always go in here
expecting most people to lie to me.
How you doing?
Detective Kennedy.
[door closes]
Let's go back to last night.
âȘ
- How do you know Vallon?
- So you didn't know he was coming to your house
till last night?
- You need to tell me.
narrator: Megan says that earlier in the day,
a friend of hers brought over a couple,
a black male and a white female,
who were looking for Vallon Broadus.
âȘ
[dramatic music]
âȘ
narrator: The couple claimed
that Vallon had kidnapped the woman's sister.
âȘ
- They told you whenever you were there?
- "Hey, we're waiting for Val."
- Nothing else?
narrator: Megan gives them the name of her friend
that brought the suspects to her house.
- All right. Hang tight.
- We need to talk to him.
âȘ
narrator: The next day...
âȘ
Fugitive Warrants detectives
bring in Megan's friend, who knows the suspects.
âȘ
- Now, there's a murder that happened.
Your name has come up, OK?
So let's go back to when you got over
to where this occurred at.
narrator: He says that when they arrived at the house,
the suspects were already there,
waiting for Vallon.
- Well, I'm gonna be straight up with you.
I think you're telling a little bit of the truth.
- Yeah, but I don't think you're telling me everything.
Megan's telling me that you guys are all in the house,
and that this is a plan,
that they're thinking this girl's being kidnapped,
and this guy with the shotgun is there to rescue her,
and everybody in the house, including you--
everybody knew that was the plan.
âȘ
I'm wanting you to give me the names...
of the people that were in that car.
[suspenseful music]
âȘ
narrator: Detective Rayell Johnson
is investigating the New Orleans murder
of 25-year-old Bruce Tims Jr.
Now, he has finally tracked down Aja,
the woman he believes knows the alleged killer.
âȘ
- What happened Friday night?
- I'm a shy girl. - Mm-hmm.
- So I drink. - Mm-hmm.
- So I don't remember what happened Friday.
- OK, so you understand
I'm investigating a homicide.
This is very serious, OK?
I don't want you to sit up in here
and play with your life, OK?
So let's go back to Friday night.
What happened that night?
- I was hanging out
in front of Last Call, I guess.
- OK, and what happened out there?
- I guess they had a fight.
I'm not too sure.
- OK.
Who is that?
- That? - Mm-hmm.
- That's me.
- Who is that?
- That's my friend.
- Who?
âȘ
- Who's Brandon?
You don't know Brandon?
- He told me his name was Ashton.
- You think I just pulled you in here
just to play games with you?
Why would you think I would ask you if his name was Brandon?
Because I already know his name Brandon,
and you know his name Brandon.
- He told me his name was Ashton.
- OK.
And that night,
was Ashton with you,
if we gonna call him Ashton?
- Yeah, you've seen the picture.
- When's the last time you talked to him?
- I don't remember.
- You don't remember.
OK.
So I'm just wasting my time speaking to you, then?
- Did I do the shooting? - Am I wasting my time?
- Are you convicting me of doing the shooting?
- No, I'm not. - OK.
- You think that's the only way that you can get in trouble?
- No, but-- - All right, then.
So that's what you need to be thinking about.
Don't try to outsmart me,
'cause you gonna lose this battle, darling.
- I'm not. I'm not.
- OK.
That's all you got for me today?
No problem.
It's obvious she's trying to cover up for him.
In time, she's most likely gonna catch a charge herself,
but as of right now,
I'm letting her go.
I plan on going to show a lineup
to our surviving victim,
and hopefully, we get him identified.
âȘ
narrator: 11 days after the shooting...
- I'm gonna try to make this real quick.
narrator: The surviving victim arrives at Homicide.
[dark music]
- Photographs are in here.
You can take them out,
look at them one at a time.
âȘ
[dramatic music]
âȘ
narrator: The surviving victim positively identifies
Brandon Guidry as the alleged shooter.
- All right, sir,
thank you for your cooperation.
- All right.
Let's do it.
Second-degree murder.
narrator: Patrol hits the streets,
looking for Brandon.
[indistinct police radio chatter]
But when the search comes up empty,
the team turns to the public for help.
- If you wreak havoc on our city,
then we are gonna find you.
- We're asking anybody in the community.
If they have information,
bring that to our Homicide Unit.
If crime is the life you choose,
then prison will be the price you pay.
[tense music]
âȘ
narrator: Five months later...
[phone ringing]
- Homicide, Detective Johnson.
narrator: Detective Rayell Johnson gets a call
from the U.S. Marshals.
- All right.
Well, good news.
Brandon Guidry was just arrested in Florida.
He's gonna be extradited back here to New Orleans.
As soon as the Marshals got to him, he lawyered up,
said he's not making any statements.
So we're actually going to arrest Aja Doucette
for accessory to second-degree murder.
During the investigation, she lied to us,
tried to cover up.
She was totally uncooperative.
Didn't give us any information.
I even believe that she helped Brandon try to elude arrest.
It's a sad case.
Bruce had nothing to do with the situation.
He was actually trying to break up a fight.
âȘ
narrator: Johnson meets with Bruce's family
to notify them of the arrest.
- Hello.
âȘ
We arrested him in Florida today.
- Well, I'm glad that he's in custody now.
Friday, it'll be five months.
It was the hardest thing that anybody ever told me.
I mean, some days are good. Some days are bad.
I have to listen to videos that he does,
or I have to look at pictures every day of his Facebook page,
but it's the only connection I have with him,
because I can't speak to him directly.
You have a different bond with all of your kids,
and he was--
he was my only son.
- I'm gonna give you a hug.
- I appreciate it, thank you. - All right.
We're gonna be in contact, OK? - OK.
- All right. - All right.
[dramatic music]

narrator: In the Tulsa murder
of 44-year-old Vallon Broadus,
Detective Mark Kennedy meets a man who was there
when Vallon was killed
to tell him the names of the suspects.
âȘ
âȘ
narrator: As the clock winds down,
Kennedy decides to cut the witness loose.
- That wasn't the way I wanted it.
I was hoping this guy would name the suspect.
[sighs]
[clock ticking]
narrator: In the first 48,
Tulsa Homicide responded to the murder
of Vallon Broadus,
learned he was killed by a shotgun blast
in the driveway of a house,
tracked down the woman who lives in the house,
and discovered Vallon
might have been lured into a trap.
âȘ
[cell phone rings]
- This is Kennedy.
All right, thanks. Bye.
That was the guy we just interviewed.
The one that we thought brought the suspects to the house.
He just had a change of heart,
and he gave us some contact information
about one of the people.
âȘ
"Ike Nicholson."
narrator: 48-year-old Ike Nicholson
has convictions for robbery as well as drug possession.
- Ike Nicholson is with a girl.
She's a white female.
narrator: A white female is also associated
with Ike's phone number.
Both suspects have open warrants.
- We need to talk to them.
[dramatic music]
[indistinct police radio chatter]
âȘ
[phone ringing]
narrator: Two days later...
- This is Kennedy.
Oh, awesome.
narrator: Police arrest the suspects
after staking out their house
in the nearby town of Bethany.
- All right. We're gonna head that way.
Are you ready? Let's go.
- Yeah.
âȘ
- Come on back, guys. - All right.
- I want to know the truth.
Why you guys basically went to Tulsa to begin with.
- Prostituting them out?
âȘ
- OK. When was this?
- Um...
- Where was Ike?
âȘ
- You were waiting for Vallon to show up.
- Did Ike have a weapon with him?
âȘ
[dramatic music]
âȘ
- Did you see Ike do it?
- So then after the shooting occurs,
did he say he shot the guy?
âȘ
- Did you find your sister?
- But now that you look back in hindsight, I mean,
obviously Vallon didn't have anything to do with it.
âȘ
At this point, I don't look to charge her.
I mean, she's, you know, acting like gonna be
a cooperating witness.
We'll do Ike next.
We'll see what he has to say.
Ike.
Were you in Tulsa last Wednesday?
- I'll just get to the point, man.
Obviously, I've talked to the people at that house.
And I think it would be smart
to tell your side of the story now.
- [scoffs]
- Well, I-I find that hard to believe.
- I know it's hard. I know you're in a bad place.
I think the intentions were probably pretty good,
and that's what I want to get to.
What was going through your mind that caused this to happen?
âȘ
- Did you know that Val was supposed to show up
at that house?
- Yeah, yeah. - All right.
So you're sitting in the car,
and whenever you see the maroon car pull in--
he pulls all the way up under the carport.
- Did you see Val get hit?
- Well, I saw him.
I saw the look on his face that he might not--
I might have shot him.
- What was your--
- Bad deal.
All right, we're pretty much done here.
I appreciate it. Well, I'll have these guys
come in a get you here in a minute.
Thank you for your honesty.
All right.
âȘ
There's other avenues they could have taken.
They could have got law enforcement involved.
They didn't do any of that.
They tried to do it on their own,
and here's the result.
You know, this whole thing was for nothing.
I mean, she wasn't with him.
Didn't look like Vallon had her,
and Vallon ends up dead,
and this guy's going to jail for it.
âȘ
[somber music]
âȘ
narrator: Three weeks after Vallon Broadus was murdered...
[indistinct chatter]
- This is me and my daddy right here.
- Mm-hmm.
- Girl, them pants was so tight.
- Girl, look at him.
[chuckling]
âȘ
- My pain is for his kids.
âȘ
He would have been a great asset
to their lives.
âȘ
He was important and loved by each and every one of us.
He was--he was the one that would always want
to keep our family together.
Losing somebody to this magnitude
is devastating.
âȘ
- I'm gonna miss him a lot.
