Transcripts
when it comes to DIY tunneling I'm
writing the book on it I've dug him from
my house I've dug them from my workshop
and I've dug a massive underground
bunker in the back Garden but it's not
just me at it tunnel Dave is digging his
own Great Escape style tunnel and with
it being the 80th anniversary that the
boys got out I decided to go and see him
and we're going to break out ourselves
oh if only it was that
[Music]
simple
[Music]
so I'm off to Sea tunnel Dave now his
project is a lot different to mine he's
got a shipping container buried in his
garden as you can see and it's accessed
by a spiral staircase which has been
built inside a
well now this project is inspired by The
Great Escape so it's a tunnel that you
crawl down not walk down but in true
Great Escape sty we've got a windscreen
wiper powerered air pump to pump air
through the tunnel and then we've got
this fantastic cart system which
actually works off a kid's hoverboard
that is a genius
move you having to go Colin oh yes one
for
you here
too I love
you and here we are
internal Dave's
tunnel obviously different to mine but
it's just as cool even Tom had a go on
the car but his experience was different
W even move yank it he
go all right all right Tom I'm coming
back
you what are you
doing
I'm
back so after talking to Dave with 50%
of my underwear on show tunneling is
tunneling now Dave's ground is a lot
easier and a lot softer to dig than mine
but obviously having access via well
means water is never that far away and
which means damp and mold can be a bit
more of an issue now the grand plan is
to tunnel from the bunker near the well
across to a new basement he's going to
build behind his house but is not
tunneling across at the moment No so at
the minute he's digging up to the
surface cuz it's the Great Escape
anniversary I think next week or the
80th anniversary so he's kind of to
celebrate that he's digging up to the
surface making like a little temperary
vent thing but uh as he's found out
digging up is a lot harder than digging
down or across cuz it all falls on your
head so digging up to the surface
breaking out great escape style sign me
up
so on the way back to see Dave oh I've
made a rookie mistake I stopped off and
got myself an Indian Keanan on the way
give your a little bit of bad guts when
I got there oh ohal Dave I've done a poo
in your house and it probably smells but
it don't matter I've left the bathroom
window
[Music]
open I like to make good first
impressions literally only the second
time you've met this guy Colin come on
SO to make our escape and get to the
surface we've got to go through about 6
to 8T of dirt and as I know digging up
is so much more harder it all drops in
your face you you kind of need to do it
without looking what you're doing you
just got to keep going Dave making a
fine job of this we can smell freedom
people we can see the roots of the grass
above
[Music]
us very nearly there now oh yeah look at
that that's definitely Roe you didn't
think you'd see the lawn from underneath
got take a drill through we can see
where we
are oh that F God
yeah we're through and then just like in
the film Dave got some grass down that's
it we've got grass now we got grass it's
time to
escape with the search light scanning we
were ready to escape we had our civilian
clothes on we had our suitcases come on
boys let's
go
first off Dave squeezed up and pushed
his Spade through the
surface they then pushed up broke the
turf broke the surface and had a good
luck round and then of course he
realized we were 20 foot short of his
house but we knew
that I've got you suitcas right it's all
clear up there are you been up yeah
quick mark they
are we're escaping Dave then pushed his
suitcase through and escaped to the
safety of his own
[Applause]
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
garden Dave was out it was now my turn
come first grade Escape here we
go got me arm think the case is too big
my case is too big this totally sums up
my Great
Escape go
get right come on
suitcase get out of the way you're in
the own
waye
oh
here we go there we
[Laughter]
go now I apologize to the claustrophobic
people this does look a lot worse on
camera but it still was a pretty tight
fit
um this
[Music]
F
I'll try
[Music]
[Laughter]
[Music]
again you might have to go us the
Germans to go push it back down
again the Germans have come I can't use
that kind so my Escape wasn't going too
well back in 1944 I'm not sure I could
have asked the German for helping
getting my suitcase out yeah wait a
minute I'm I'm going to go back down out
the way that's is good go on then
John what's ger for
John he
John
case welcome to the tunneling side of
YouTube Dave so happy is escape back in
come to rescue College come to rescue
let's go for it bre
head
W oh
[Music]
that's right that that go You thing if I
give it a good
shove
on
[Applause]
that's got to be close get the
feeling that they didn't make this much
noise in 1944 right you ready I don't
think they asked the Germans for help
neither did they get their suitcases
out I will take this kitchen sink
I'm going to need a shower when I get
home and then with one final piece of
turf removed it was ready for the final
push here we go
stqueen it was through at
last where's the oh You' got the spay
didn't you so with yet more help for my
German friend I could finally
Escape
[Music]
[Applause]
we're out and now with the power of
editing I will make it look like a
seamless
[Music]
exercise
[Music]
where is the
ging here we
go
oh what a laugh that was thank you very
much Tel day for inviting me on that
that was absolutely fantastic really
puts into perspective as well the amount
of effort that the boys went to in 1944
to get out of that camp and just support
their tunnel with just bits of bed slats
and whatever they could find around the
camp absolutely amazing now I've linked
tunnel Dave's channel in the description
so you can go and check his tunnel
progress out and his project that's
ongoing of course I'm just doing a
little project of the minute just to get
out out from getting out from the ground
getting out the ground the ground so
that will be uploaded on this channel as
soon as it's finished stay tuned for
that subscribe and then of course I'm
back on the secret garage boom
everything is good people see you in the
next
one come find a tennis ball I've
literally got
this that's very
[Music]
