Transcripts
Sony has changed almost everything aboutĀ its home entertainment lineup and in moreĀ Ā
ways than one I'm about to show youĀ Sony's craziest LED TV ever and thatĀ Ā
ain't even the half of it stick aroundĀ because you are not going to want to miss
this welcome back everyone I'm Caleb DenisonĀ and sitting on news is just part of my job butĀ Ā
I'm not exaggerating when I say that keepingĀ all this info that I'm about to share with youĀ Ā
a secret has been a special kind of challengingĀ that's because I think it is so interesting andĀ Ā
exciting you'll see what I mean in a moment let'sĀ get into it right now for context and for thoseĀ Ā
of you watching who are unaware I was part of aĀ small group that traveled to Sony headquartersĀ Ā
in Tokyo in November 2023 and it was there that IĀ saw and heard most of what I'm about to tell youĀ Ā
more recently I was part of a much larger groupĀ that visited the Sony Pictures lot in Culver CityĀ Ā
California where I learned even more and thatĀ was no typical press trip but I'll talk aboutĀ Ā
that in another video later this week right nowĀ though I'm going to lay out the nuts and boltsĀ Ā
of some sweeping changes Sony has made to its TVĀ and audio lineup and show you for the first timeĀ Ā
possibly the most impressive mini LED TV I've everĀ seen so the first bomb drop here is that Sony hasĀ Ā
completely transformed the naming convention forĀ its TVs forget X90 this and A80 that all that isĀ Ā
gone here is Sony's 2024 TV lineup starting atĀ the top we've got the Bravia 9 next after thatĀ Ā
is the Bravia 8 stepping down from there we get toĀ the Bravia 7 and then the next and final step isĀ Ā
the Bravia 3 now let's start from the bottom andĀ work our way up the Bravia 3 is what I guess youĀ Ā
could call Sony's entry level TV although Sony'sĀ entry level is going to perform more like otherĀ Ā
brands medium to medium high models it's a directĀ LED TV which means it does not have local dimmingĀ Ā
it comes in sizes ranging from 43 in up to 85Ā in it has Sony's 4K HDR X1 processor and 4K XĀ Ā
Reality Pro upscaling which is a step down fromĀ the higher models but still among the best TVĀ Ā
processors on the market it has a 60 HZ panel butĀ still supports some gaming features like Auto lowĀ Ā
latency mode it supports Dolby Vision Dolby AtmosĀ DTSX and DTS surround as well as HDR10 and HLG itĀ Ā
does not have an ATSC 3.0 tuner and it runs onĀ the Google TV platform as all of Sony's TVs doĀ Ā
this will be Sony's most affordable TV and yes IĀ think I will be reviewing it this year now whileĀ Ā
I'm reluctant to compare it to a model fromĀ previous years I guess you could liken it toĀ Ā
an X80 series TV The Next Step Up is the BraviaĀ 7 I suppose you could consider this a replacementĀ Ā
for the X90L series last year but it's quite aĀ bit more advanced best just to think of it asĀ Ā
Sony's second best LED TV now that's becauseĀ the Bravia 7 is a mini LED TV this year withĀ Ā
full array local dimming XR backlight Master driveĀ it's armed with Sony's revered XR processor whichĀ Ā
comes along with XR clear image upscaling thatĀ everyone raved about last year it's got a 120 HZĀ Ā
panel acoustic multi-audio with voice Zoom 3 moreĀ on that amazing feature in the next video when weĀ Ā
talk about audio stuff it does have an ATSC 3.0Ā tuner and a four-way stand that allows for twoĀ Ā
different heights and two different widths and itĀ comes in sizes ranging from 55 to 85 in new forĀ Ā
this year is a Prime video calibrated mode as wellĀ as Netflix adaptive calibrated mode and it addsĀ Ā
IMAX enhanced among a myriad of other featuresĀ that I'll talk about in a future deep dive videoĀ Ā
because some of those features are amazing andĀ should not be glossed over we just don't haveĀ Ā
time to do that right here next is the Bravia 8Ā and this might mess with your head a little bitĀ Ā
the Bravia 8 is an OLED TV I'm going to giveĀ some of you enthusiasts out there watching aĀ Ā
little time to absorb that okay yes so the BraviaĀ 8 is essentially replacing the A80L from last yearĀ Ā
which is to say that it is a new new OLED TVĀ for Sony and it uses a WRGB OLED panel not a QDĀ Ā
OLED panel it's got all the same features as theĀ Bravia 7 with the notable exception that it hasĀ Ā
acoustic surface audio which as a reminder meansĀ that the screen itself makes sound and we reallyĀ Ā
dig that around here screen sizes for the BraviaĀ 8 include 55 65 and 77 in variants now try notĀ Ā
to get too hung up that as far as model names goĀ the bra 8 and OLED TVs have been folded in amongĀ Ā
LED TVs with no apparent distinction to ConsumersĀ those of you who care please plan to join me in aĀ Ā
future video in which we will commiserate overĀ that and debate the merits of Sony's decisionĀ Ā
to do so for now though we must not be distractedĀ because it is time to talk about Sony's flagshipĀ Ā
TV for 2024 guaranteed to be one of the mostĀ exciting TVs of the year the Bravia 9 the BraviaĀ Ā
9 employs the new mini LED backlight technologyĀ that I showed you at the beginning of this yearĀ Ā
now for anyone who missed that video or justĀ needs the simplified version Sony's new mini LEDĀ Ā
backlight panels feature legitimately InnovativeĀ super tiny backlight control chips that allow moreĀ Ā
mini LEDs to be packed into a tighter spaceĀ much higher brightness while also using farĀ Ā
less power and they have more granular dimmingĀ control which frankly is in my opinion their mostĀ Ā
impressive attribute the result is a mini LEDĀ TV that can push above 4,000 nits of brightnessĀ Ā
in Peak highlight areas which I will argue isĀ both impressive and important however what I'mĀ Ā
most excited about is the potential for this TVĀ to minimize blooming and halo effect while alsoĀ Ā
offering extremely good low light performanceĀ and Shadow detail in short if what I saw duringĀ Ā
demonstrations translates into real lifeĀ performance the way I hope and expect itĀ Ā
will the Bravia 9 will be the most technicallyĀ accurate and Visually impressive LED TV everĀ Ā
made it can do things that the famous z9d simplyĀ could not do and while this is not the deep diveĀ Ā
video I feel like I need to explain why I thinkĀ that's the case we like to get excited about highĀ Ā
brightness TVs because brightness is an importantĀ component of contrast and also it's just straightĀ Ā
up dazzling but in 2024 there will be a ton ofĀ bright TVs on the market some of which lay claimĀ Ā
to getting much brighter than the Bravia 9 hereĀ now the real measure of how good this year's miniĀ Ā
LED TVs will be is going to be how well they pullĀ off low luminance images while also mitigatingĀ Ā
the blooming or halo effect that TV nerds likeĀ me love to hate that is the real challenge andĀ Ā
it is those measures that will get a mini LED TVĀ looking closer to OLED in terms of contrast andĀ Ā
overall picture performance while also beingĀ able to display bright highlight detail in aĀ Ā
way that OLED TVs simply cannot the reason thatĀ I think the Bravia 9 can pull this off startsĀ Ā
with Sony's excellent processing but it is theĀ granular dimming control that is going to bringĀ Ā
it home and to illustrate how it is differentĀ than other brands mini LED systems I actuallyĀ Ā
want to head into the kitchen here and pull upĀ my Vivant smart home app no this is not an ad forĀ Ā
Vivant I swear I just think this is going to makeĀ the most meaningful illustration but before weĀ Ā
do move over there let me explain how other miniĀ LED TVs work so for years when we've talked aboutĀ Ā
local dimming I think folks have thought of theĀ LED dimming action on a TV to be kind of like aĀ Ā
dimmer switch for your lights at home you have offĀ you have full blast on and then you have lots ofĀ Ā
subtle levels in between but in reality most LEDĀ dimming is an on or off proposition if you wantĀ Ā
an area to be dark you turn off the backlightsĀ behind that area if you want it to be bright youĀ Ā
turn on the backlights in that area and then allĀ the subtlety of brightness levels in between isĀ Ā
actually handled by the LCD cells being eitherĀ open or closed or somewhere in between now toĀ Ā
offer finer control than just having huge blocksĀ of dimmable lights more dimming zones were addedĀ Ā
so you could have something super bright sittingĀ next to something super dark now this helps butĀ Ā
it's also really hard to do quickly which is whyĀ often TVs with a bunch of dimming zones appear toĀ Ā
brighten and darken kind of sluggishly what we'veĀ really needed for mini LED TVs to get better isĀ Ā
a backlight dimming system that actually did workĀ like the dimmable LED lights that we have at homeĀ Ā
see here on my Vivant app I can dim or brightenĀ each light on the kitchen track independentlyĀ Ā
those are the zones for our little analogy but I canĀ also dim them at a granular level 20% 30% 40% andĀ Ā
so on all the way up to full power it's that kindĀ of granular dimming control that Sony has at workĀ Ā
in its new backlight system and you can see itsĀ benefits here in this demo where they have theirĀ Ā
new flagship backlight system right against theirĀ own Flagship backlight system from last year youĀ Ā
can see very clearly here that there is much finerĀ control than Sony's own best TV last year andĀ Ā
that's what I think is going to set the Bravia 9Ā apart from the rest of the pack this year it's gotĀ Ā
all the features up to 4,000 nits Peak PerformanceĀ and it comes in 65, 75 and 85 in sizes so now youĀ Ā
finally know what I've been knowing for a minuteĀ now no more rumors or speculation that's the dealĀ Ā
Oh and before I go just a reminder that all theĀ rumors that you may have have heard about theĀ Ā
A95L QD OLED that it was going away or that SonyĀ was quitting OLED all of them are false the A95LĀ Ā
will continue to be Sony's Flagship OLED throughĀ at least most of 2024 whether we see an updateĀ Ā
to that model this year is well that is up in theĀ air thanks as always for watching everyone I knowĀ Ā
I don't even have to ask you for the commentsĀ but I'm going to do it anyway what do you thinkĀ Ā
of Sony's new lineup and more specifically theĀ new model names do you like the simplicity thinkĀ Ā
it's more confusing let me know down below hit theĀ like button if you would please and subscribe soĀ Ā
you don't miss the next two videos wherein I'llĀ talk about Sony's new audio lineup including theĀ Ā
successor to the super popular HT-A9 and laterĀ a deeper dive into what Sony is offering thisĀ Ā
year I'll see you on the next one and until thenĀ here's two other videos I think you might like
