Transcripts
are we gonna not talk about the YouTube
thing or I think I'll just that's just
like a question like last night I was
talking to Claire and I was like how is
shorts still only one minute cuz I was
trying to write my nothing short then it
would be
long okay this just proves that this
could be a fun conversation but I think
we just do the headphone round up this
week and then next J right now wait I
don't get it what why would YouTube
shorts ever be longer cuz they're
vertical
[Music]
yo what is up people of the internet
welcome back to another episode of the
waveform podcast we're your hosts I'm
Marquez I'm Andrew and I'm David and uh
today we got a mix of stories it's kind
of a it's one of those weeks where a
bunch of little stuff well a bunch of
mediumsized stuff happened medium all
over the place stuff yeah a bunch of
very unrelated the the tangents this
week are going to be off the chain
medium rare week yeah from any anywhere
from uh the R1 reviews being out uh
sorry I just processed your joke solid
um Tesla cutting their supercharger team
out of nowhere uh we got some headphones
to talk about it's a good time I can't
wait to hear the Segways this week yeah
it's G to be fun speaking of Segways but
first what do you
[Laughter]
remember do you remember that Bird app
social media we were talking about
Twitter a while
ago this the other one the better one
bird bir buddy bird buddy they sent us
one and I installed it do you have Birds
I got Birds boy do you have a oh that
one's cool do you have like a cool
variety of birds or something I've only
had they so it's really cool so these
are birds that are in my front yard you
see that beak it says the name of the
bird if a new species comes up like if I
go back when these were new oh this blue
jay is awesome and you get video of them
too eating the seeds that's just a blue
jay's tail feather
um yeah it's pretty awesome and it's
just like social media with birds yeah
and I can share this to everybody I can
pick which postcards I want to post
awesome Cardinals uh house finch the
craziest one so far yeah those are the
only three I've gotten so far but lots
of them and this blue jay picture is
awesome that's pretty hard just eating
the seed album cover album cover new
waveform thumbnail have you got in
anything that's not a bird yet not yet
okay a squirrel it was funny in said it
would take a couple weeks before they
might trust the bird feeder but they
were there like day two tell Tim to uh
put that blue J in the thumbnail in the
thumbnail just just behind one of our
heads like it's one of the other hosts
no one's going to know why that would be
awesome but yeah this app's pretty
awesome the bird feeder is pretty cool
it's a little pricey but do you get a
notification every time a bird shows up
you can change how you want it so mine
is if it's like Just Happening it'll be
like quick you can watch this bird live
and then at the end of the day it'll be
like you had x amount of birds show up
and these many different species and
then you can do a recap of all the ones
that came how's the solar roof do you
have to recharge it I have not had to
recharge it yet my only gripe right now
is I think I need to move it closer to
my house because the Wi-Fi connection
seems like it's going out a little which
isn't that's fault and 4K or 1080p
footage is locked behind a bird Buddy
Pro account oh which wait they only give
you 4K upell 720 I think it's 720 it's
pretty solid and I guess you're just
looking up birds so maybe I don't need
high res of you need 1080 you need 1080
4K baby what are you talking about how
much do you have toay how much is it I
don't know I don't feel like paying for
yeah I wouldn't either that's fair but
there's some people out there who might
appar think I can also send all of you
guys links to like join and watch this
bird feeder if you want the fact that
you haven't done that already I did and
nobody listened in slack you did where
send it vacation I'll send it again but
I'm pretty sure I send an invite code to
everyone in slack you can only have two
people so we'll just have to do so it's
the going to be the first two we'll have
to do like just a a bird iPad in this
office for anyone who wants to watch
such a good idea big brain it's like the
the emulating the pom Prix but yeah
putting a did it pick me up mowing the
lawn the other day Lon I don't think I
don't think it'll grab people but
squirrels though and then it'll say bird
type squirrel I can't wait for that to
happen nice yeah that's the bird Buddy
app fun that's fun speaking of birds
really quick I was doing some research
on Nikon because we were talking about
them a lot recently turns out they've
been kind of blowing up in the last
couple of years like their sales have
gone way up and remember that thought
keep going okay and a big reason is
because people are getting really into
birding right now yeah yeah cuz it's
awesome I love that for Humanity yeah
and I was talking to someone and they
were like yeah people are probably
getting into birding cuz it's like the
last thing that's kind of hard to shoot
cuz Birds move really fast and you have
to like get the midair and like it's
very it's pretty difficult to Wildlife
photography is fun and super difficult
especially like when you're used to
taking video and portraits like in a
controlled space and then you get zero
control over it you're like it's like
sports photography but smaller subjects
yeah and in Sports Photography they're
running in a circle over and over again
can find rectangle yeah yeah that's fair
yeah with like Wildlife you're like can
you go a little closer to that tree like
my framing is just not like set up here
and look at me but don't eat me but yeah
right exactly wait what what did I hold
the thought about with Nikon so you said
they it's been blowing up recently
speaking of blowing up I knew where that
was nice um Tesla laid off they just
blew up their entire supercharger team
it's just gone yeah specifically it
seems like Elon just did it one day wait
they shut down the supercharges no no
they laid off the entire supercharger
team now for those unfamiliar Tesla
superchargers pretty important part of
Tesla right um for when we talk about
electric cars almost every time we talk
about Tesla's Advantage we talk about
the supercharger Network which is if you
need to charge this car on a road trip
somewhere the only reliable consistently
reliable way to do that from our own
experience for years has been the
supercharger Network to the point where
one by one over the past few months
basically every EV maker that ships cars
to America is going to be switching
their port or shipping adapters to the
nacs port to to use Tesla Supercharger
Network because it's such a big selling
point here so all that being said Tesla
very suddenly laying off the entire
supercharger team which includes all the
permitting all of the site maintenance
all of the uh future planning and
basically just shutting down growth of
the supercharge Network like nipping it
right on on that day over 500 people
yeah seems like a pretty bold move yeah
um I think everyone sort of assumes that
it's for cost cutting and you know Tesla
stock price is doing one thing and we
want their you know profits to do the
other thing and so you know there's a
lot going on and pretty crazy ruthless
business decisions get made by this guy
all the time so yeah the supercharger
team is the latest victim completely
gone on uh I don't know how do we feel
like this is going to go yeah it's kind
of wild because like you said everyone
is moving to nacs and that layoff
included Rebecca tanushi who was the
senior director of EV charging and was
the person that pretty much like handled
all of the deals convincing all of the
other companies to switch to nacs yeah
so they kind of finished doing that and
then now the entire team is gone and
there were a bunch of employees that
literally said they were breaking ground
on new
and then they just got the news and all
of a sudden they just have to stop yeah
so it seems like at some point we're
going to feel the effects of it and I
think it would be well okay so there was
an Elon tweet about how oh we're
stopping growth and we're focusing on
just maintenance and uptime yeahor I was
just going to say like that my initial
thought on this and I don't follow stock
prices I don't know anything about
business but like when I first saw this
it felt like oh we built this crazy
supercharging system everybody loves it
it's the most reliable
everybody's going to it now thanks for
building it later like it's easier to
maintain something that you built
already instead of building it but it
seems like there's more of it yeah well
except for the fact that the amount of
cars using it is about to like
5x yes I'm not saying it's a good
decision but my first thought was like
it feels like they did it all and I feel
like we see that in Tech a lot it's like
oh thanks for building this awesome
software something like that inter good
luck building something some else we
what we need now the Peace of Mind
knowing that you're always going to have
a supercharger nearby is so important to
like ownership of an EV yeah s to
interrupt there's a lot of upcoming
locations on the map where people are
like I can't wait for that one cuz then
I can finally do this route I can
finally do this drive now it looks like
those aren't going to happen uhhuh so
yeah that's that's a bummer for those
yeah he tweeted Tesla still plans to
grow the supercharger Network just at a
slower pace for new locations and more
focus on 100% uptime And expansion of
existing locations so I don't know if
that means just adding more stalls to
existing
locations um the uptime is already
pretty dang good like they've had very
good uptime historically yeah I could
see focusing on uptime like you said if
it's going to be so many more people
maybe there's higher opportunity of the
uptime not being as good yeah and focus
on that but even if that is the focus
firing 500 people yeah and slowing the
growth of the network cuz no matter how
good the network is if we're talking
about gas cars the network looks like
crap yeah that's that's the two sides of
that car is like when you compare the
Tesla superer Network to gas cars it
seems like they need they have a lot of
growth to do but on the other side when
you compare the supercharge Network to
everyone else no longer needing to build
up their Network because they all just
signed on to do nacs it's like yeah we
won no one else is going to come close
to the Tesla super Jer network no need
to build it up anymore yeah it it feels
like when we're talking about like even
just Tesla or rivan in vehicle software
you're like like this is the best in
vehicle software of any car and you're
like how is it to an iPad it's like well
it's terrible yeah so like yeah there's
still so much room for growth here did
you guys read that story a couple weeks
ago about the I think it was an F-150
Lightning or no it was a rivan owner
that charged his car at a supercharger
and it was like right after he got his
adapter and he had a Tesla owner like
call the cops on him because he was like
it is illegal for you to do this you can
be doing this and he's like bro no they
opened it up and he's like no this is
only for Tesla users yeah little culty
little weird okay yeah the problem is
the signs still say Tesla charging only
that's true oh do they I've never not
all the signs at supercharger have a big
T and it says Tesla Supercharger
supercharging only which they obviously
mean just because don't park here and
take up a spot but previously it was
only Teslas that's very funny yeah I
it's also hilarious that person called
the cops
the biggest overreaction ever oh yeah
yeah did you also see rivan has decided
to open up their their Adventure Network
to all EVS all five of them yeah
everyone so I mean they don't have a ton
of chargers obviously but they do plan
on switching to and updating with necs
and allowing everyone to charge on their
Adventure Network as well well maybe
half of these Engineers will go to rivan
and start expanding the rivan if charge
I wonder how much capital and how big of
a head start Tesla's network has over a
realistic competitor to like make a
difference I feel like an insane amount
like even if you start building a
secondary nacs Network today I guess you
don't have to start you could just be
electri America and just start like
switching them all to nacs and building
a ton more could that realistically be
the like standard of up time someday I
don't know no seems despite the Head
Start if there were ever a time to want
to try and chip away at that Head Start
it's when they fire 500 people who built
that Head Start so who knows yeah all
right I'm working on a hold on too late
wait you don't have a you're working on
a segue yeah oh but this is a tough I've
got one this is a you do you have one
I'm willing to hear it speaking of what
could be happening on the horizon with
things like the Tesla Supercharger
network but also Meta Meta just start
started licensing The Horizon OS that it
uses on its Quest To Third parties ah
yeah yeah they did I find really funny
because I don't know if you guys
remember back when Microsoft was trying
to make Windows AR headsets and they
they like open sourced it so like Dell
made a headset it was mixed reality it
was Windows mixed reality Dell made a
headset uh Lenovo made a headset isus
made a headset it was like
2016 or
2017 um when the quest was first
starting to like take off like Oculus
connect one or two so Windows was like
we got to get in on this and they made
like paint 3D and all of these 3D
applications that sounds awesome I mean
it was pretty Co 3D yeah bro so they
basically just like wanted you to be
able to use Windows in mixed reality and
so all of these third parties made a
bunch of Hardware to be able to use with
it nobody bought it and then Microsoft
didn't support it they didn't keep it up
like at all they just didn't keep
updating it at all they eventually just
gave up and this is kind of the Playbook
it seems like very Google of them yeah
except like Google at least makes like
the underlying stuff sometimes Microsoft
basically didn't sell Hollow lens to
regular people so they didn't have a
first-party headset so they just relied
on third parties to make the headsets
that would work with Windows mixed
reality and now meta decided that it's
going to license Horizon OS so now if
you're Lenovo or Dell or Asus you can
just build basically a quest for but
running your own
Hardware um Vision Pro yeah they want to
be they want to be Android right they're
all meta is now all about open source
and they're all about like I guess we
can't build the metaverse by ourselves
and all this stuff um they're also
making a limited run gaming focused
quest with Xbox just for Xbox that makes
a ton of it's they're they're trying to
I I see what that's going to be
PlayStation has PlayStation VR and and
like it's not the most popular but like
Xbox is going to want to do that
eventually why wouldn't meta be the one
that could make money off of that yeah
that makes it too much sense honestly
right so they can just license because
they've already built out this OS they
put so much money into it like you might
as well just license it out because
again if there's more VR adoption that's
just better for meta in like every
capacity yeah they want to be the
foundation of a lot of this stuff right
that checks out yeah um they're also
pitching it to other OEM as a headset
you can carry with you and instantly
expand your workspace on the go so
basically the Vision Pro multiple
monitor kind of idea MH yeah I just I
don't know I like still understand all
of the like bigger workspace thing but I
just still see VR as fun immersive games
like this weekend uh Claire's friends
came over and brought their kids and I
pulled out the quest two that we had and
I just watch them have the best time
until literally the battery
watching people do that is so cool and
fun and like experiencing that yeah yeah
watching someone try beat saer for the
first time greatest game universally one
of the most fun things you yeah uh also
the quest 3 just got a update I just
found really funny and now has the
ability to view immersive panoramic
images nice because I feel like Zuck is
just like what can the Vision Pro do
that we can't do lying down mode Let's
Go panoramic images let's go like legs
legs whoa whoa whoa pump the brakes
we'll get there we'll get there so
anyway I just found that it's just a
very specific thing that the Vision Pro
was able to do that the quest couldn't
do and I'm sure that like Zuck is happy
about Vision Pro just because like oh
yeah that's a good idea let's just add
that and they can say we they can now
get closer and closer to saying we offer
everything Vision Pro offers for $500
right you know so yep we'll see how that
evolves in the future can't be mad at
that VR who's wearing the VR headset in
the thumbnail for this
week I think it's you you brought it up
can I just say on vacation I took the
metag glasses with me oh and they were
sick the metay bands you have like a
bunch of sick first person like pictures
and they're freaking awesome and I am
now a believer of the glasses form
factor what did you bring the sunglasses
or the clear glasses so you only wore
them outside or do you wear your
sunglasses inside no I wore them outside
because I'm not cool enough to wear them
inside but I'm imagining the like 700
p.m. dinner reservation and like the
food comes down it's like hold on honey
wait wait put your sunglasses on and
just like look stare at the food for a
minute no I think we were talking about
it yesterday but there's not a lot of
fun things I do inside that I want to
record first person things of outside
though doing a lot of cool stuff see I
want to borrow one because when Lane
first wakes up she is like the smiliest
baby ever but if she sees a phone she
like transfixes to it and kind of like
shuts down so I want to put them on just
when I pick her up in the morning cuz
it's adorable but interesting I wonder
how she would reac toyed sunglasses on
as I woke her up at 7:00 in the morning
personally I would be terrified if I
woke up S and you were there with
sunglasses hovering over the crib yeah I
Fon I fundamentally think that adding
new features to existing things that we
already use in our everyday life is the
best way
yeah I've seen a t of people outside
Manhattan with meta Quest seen meta Ray
bands I've seen them out in the wild too
someone in the building has them yeah I
have not seen them in the wild yet
really yeah not that I've noticed which
maybe that's a good thing maybe I have
seen them notice maybe they're recording
you and you just don't notice yeah they
also just uh opened up the multi
multimodal feature to everybody like uh
late last week right so so you can go
look can tell me blah blah blah yeah and
what is this do everything the rabbit
can do what is this when was the
Brooklyn Bridge made what is this
business I'm standing in front
of sir that's a Wendy's that's a water
well we should take a quick break we
drag that one we have uh we have some
quick rabbit final thoughts coming up
and some other stuff with YouTube but
first we should uh we should do trivia
we should do that
trivia all right first question
do you guys want I'll give you the
option cuz I have two options here okay
do you guys want a question about birds
or a question about Microsoft can you do
a question with both no I ordinarily I'm
I'm all for the tech questions
but you're the tiebreaker interesting oh
you have one bird one Microsoft yeah oh
W I think we both know what we have a
better chance
at Bird yeah let's go Birds let's go
let's go all right so we were talking
about the bird buddy earlier mic birds
so let's talk birds like finches micro
Bird's scientific name is
C cyanos Christ CA what
is wait chist like fr
tost the is a
Christ what is the common name of said
bird I don't know wow ask me the
Microsoft question Twitter is it Twitter
bird it's the Twitter bird the Twitter
verse yeah let's let's do the Microsoft
question why not let's let's do you want
both I think we've all just
realized well we're still trying the
bird one but we can also do the
Microsoft one you guys are going to hate
yourself when you learn the answer to
that okay the Microsoft we're still
figuring out what does The X in Xbox
stand for
experience extra
wait exercise exercise box it just looks
cool man yeah I think it looks cool the
Elon approach for bro it's X yeah x x is
cool right we'll be right
[Music]
back all right welcome back we have at
least a little bit of updated thoughts
on the rabbit r one yeah I hope I'm
bleeding your eyes I love that that
orange color is still so good okay so
the review came out the video is up
surprising amount of time spent color
correcting every shot with orange in it
to try to make it look the way it
actually does in real life still hard
really hard it's the brightest orange
thing in any room that it's in it like
almost is visible in the dark that's how
it's like a safety cone Orange it's like
hard yeah safety it's like a darker
orange that is still wildly bright
almost hurt your eyes bright it's
impressive I love it it's impressive
it's this little AI in a box designed by
teenage engineering made by a startup
called rabbit and it has a camera it has
a speaker it has a jog wheel has a
screen we talked about it a bit last
week and we compared to the human AI pin
talked about what it does and sort of
this this uh I was actually pondering
last week in real time like the state of
reviewing these unfinished gadgets and
that did make it to the review so you
should watch the review that'll be the
the link below the the like button so
you can check that out um our updates
are one there's an O OTA update for this
thing the first one which pretty classic
as soon as you're done reviewing
literally that always happens I feel
like it always happens and then there's
always comments like they should have
just waited for the review we didn't
know about that either the review should
have waited for the OTA or the product
should have shipped with this giant fix
huge fix one or the other maybe um so
the fix mostly seems to improve standby
battery life yes from your experience
how has it has it actually worked yeah
actually surprisingly they said that
there was a core bug that they squashed
which I'm I'm not really sure why they
didn't do that before they shipped to
the device didn't they claim it's like
5x better battery life which is kind of
true because yeah cuz previously it's
like if I didn't charge it the next day
it would be dead even if I didn't use it
once 100% um now yesterday at around 400
p.m. I unplugged it at around
97% and I haven't used it once today but
it's still at
72 that's actually that's way better
than it used to be yeah at least it's
not dead every time you pick it up now
we were having this conversation
yesterday when that the news came out
about the 5x battery life update and
David and I were saying like that is
such a wild number that either there's
no way it does that good or what did you
mess up in the first place that you can
5x something yeah yeah you don't usually
see software updates doing 5x
Improvement of anything no like I 10 20%
or something not
500% yeah wow so SC wheel still sucks
well the other thing that they actually
changed the scroll wheel acceleration
yeah cuz a lot of people were talking
about it so now it it moves a lot faster
it still doesn't look it's still not
quite there but last time it was like a
full thing would move like one and a now
ites now it moves like three the
acceleration feels a lot better it could
still be even more fine tuned but it's a
lot better I still think you need a way
to get home without scrolling all the
way to the top and clicking home mhm um
like a gesture yeah almost like a like a
swipe May if only screens if only there
was room yeah I really so Dave 2D he
also did a review of the rabbit and he
had this section in his video I I texted
him after cuz I literally we almost did
this in the Humane video in this rabbit
review maybe we'll just play the clip so
if I had to redesign this thing this is
what I would do first I'd get rid of the
scroll wheel completely it's cute but
it's just not useful enough to me and
then now probably just move the camera
on top of the bezel there's a little bit
of room there and then maybe add some
Hardware volume buttons it is a speech
based device and you might as well
extend the screen because you know you
got a little bit of room down there and
oh look it's a phone like the thing you
already have in your pocket I literally
had the exact same thing I removed it
from the video but it was a section of
the Humane AI pin review which is okay
how would I improve this thing that they
made okay number one the battery life
sucks so maybe just a way bigger battery
the camera's bad so I give it bigger
cameras uh the projector sucks so
probably give it a screen instead and
then like three or four steps later it's
like a I just made a phone I just
invented the smartphone yeah so that
that is still so very true about the big
question these things have to answer
which is why would I want one when I
have a phone already yeah and they kind
of don't really answer that for most
people which is still true but at least
the battery doesn't die overnight
anymore which is good I think it makes
more sense on the rabbit one because the
Humane pin at least is like connected to
you on the outside and different when
this you still have to pull it out of
your pocket so why is this not just an
app well we'll get there but I just want
to read the release notes for the update
real quick so idle batter performance uh
improved by up to 5x added time zone
selection for R1 settings hug to Cor how
is that not I can't believe it ships
without time zone selection yeah and
also everyone is on Pacific time that's
why yeah all of that in real life yeah
yeah that's on the wrong Pacific time
cuz I asked it what time it was and it
told me 3 hours before actual Pacific
time like when I reviewed it in the
video you can see mine says it's 7:00
a.m. but it's clearly noon in the studio
and off camera we asked what time is it
and it said it's 4: a.m. on the west
coast which which means it's 7 a.m.
where you are so it's just like yeah
both of those things are wrong but at
least you gave me some math to explain
why you're thinking what you are so yeah
show your work so it says there's now a
times on selection and it should Auto
Select based on GPS location so it has
your GPS location well it says made more
aware of when to use GPS to query your
location and understands how to leverage
that information another part of the
update is a response to your Tweet
basically yeah it should hopefully stop
saying I do not have access to your
location right
yeah so the confusing thing about that
just to clarify is when that made it
seem like it doesn't use GPS but it does
want to use it right but for some reason
the language model just was telling you
it didn't so that's what made it all
seem really weird because a large
language model is a prediction machine
the large language model when you query
it is like no I'm not because the
language model is not using GPS but
because this has cellular it knows your
location the physical Hardware does know
your location and so the L anguage model
was like no I don't because technically
the language model doesn't but the
hardware does my fist didn't punch you
my brain punched
me yeah this was just an example it but
because it said it out loud like that it
made it sound like it was like sneakily
keeping track of you yeah people posted
a lot of clips about this like Meta Meta
does the exact same thing with the rayb
bands people post clips about it exact
same thing anyway that was an update uh
improve detection of server connections
which is good because cuz a lot of the
times you'll just like unlock it and
it'll be like connecting to server
failed to connect to Rabbit OS and it's
like cool I just can't use the device
until I lock it and unlock it for more
just use it in offline mode yeah oh wait
does nothing um improved music playback
UI so yeah that's thank God that's nice
it's actually really I will say the
couple of apps that it does have the
music playback really annoying it's bad
I could not get the Uber app to work I
connected my account it was logged in it
was attached I said call me in Uber to
this place it said where would you like
to call it from give me the location and
then I did and it said okay calling an
Uber where would you like to call it
from give me your location I said from
here and it said okay where would you
like to call it from so I just can't get
that to work um I'm happy that there are
some improvements with music I think
I'll EAD it now did you see Quinn's
tweet about ordering door Dash yeah like
didn't ask him what he wanted and then
sent it home when he was at work yeah
and he didn't get to like confirm any of
those things automatically selected the
highest tip yeah um okay improved
reliability for Bluetooth connectivity
which I'm not sure anyone is using
Bluetooth on it right now because at the
end like later down the line if you used
this as your main device you'd want to
be able to use Bluetooth on it but right
now literally nobody can use it as their
main device so that's you know uh
improve stability on meeting assistant/
recorder for longer durations sure
improve the accuracy regarding time
related information during conversation
nice still doesn't do timers yeah so I
didn't know that I thought it did no you
know what the best part of it is when
you ask it uh to set a timer instead of
being like just saying I can't set a
timer it's like I don't have the ability
to set a timer if you would like to
track the time you should stare at a
clock
it if you would like to track the time
you can manually track the time by
looking at a clock I maybe I'm just
hallucinating this like the rabbit would
do but I swore they took a shot at
Humane for timers and like reminders um
I don't remember I don't know okay I
could be totally wrong on that but I
just assumed this had timers it is wild
that two over $100 devices came out in
the last month that can't set a timer
well the iPad doesn't have a calculator
so pick your point listen I I and we
make fun of that just as much as it
deserves to be made fun of so yeah Fair
for a while the homep could only set one
timer at a time remember that that's
hilarious and it was a huge update when
they added a while was like a
decade was that that we live in an Age
of
Wonders I think so yeah we truly live
it's so funny cuz on I like uh home my
Nest home I'll have a timer and I'll be
like oh this probably needs to be in the
oven a little longer you can just go
like add 10 minutes to that timer and
you can watch it just immediately do it
and it's like that's kind of nice and
there are somehow things in 2023 that
can't even get close to doing Society if
Instagram had an iPad app we could set
multiple timers yeah yeah yeah that's
something I would like my personal
assistant to be able to do for could you
imagine hiring a personal assistant and
being
like remind me in five minutes and it's
like I can't do that I can't do it
man that's something I not my wheel
house like you might have to use your
phone what are you even for yeah okay so
um that's all fun
still still for sale so why can't you
just like download an app a timer app so
yeah interesting so yesterday uh michall
Raman who you guys might know he used to
work with XA developers he's now a
freelance but mostly doing stuff with
Android authority we interviewed him for
the S imagent Mod episode exactly sorry
I didn't mean to you should have just
let you said thate finish
our sandwiches there it is
anyway I'm sorry Ellis he texted me
yesterday and he said dude you're not
going to believe this and he sent me a
screenshot and it was the R1 logo on a
pixel uh
6A and
effectively the whole rabbit OS R1 thing
can run on an Android phone because it's
basically like the the thing that you
inter interact with on the device is
basically just an Android app but it's
the only thing you interact with so the
APK that he was able to side side load
onto his pixel 6A went through the whole
setup process just like he W would on
the rabbit R1 he was able to it said
like things for inserting your T-Mobile
SIM card now you can do this blah blah
blah all this stuff and he was able to
query it ask it questions set it up on
when he went on to Rabbit Hole it said
you've got a rabbit R1 I think he set it
up through the the launcher yeah like he
set up his Rabbit Hole account on the
pixel 6A yeah oh wow yeah so it's just
very funny because this technically is
just a phone because everyone says why
shouldn't this be an app why isn't this
just an app and the irony of this whole
thing is it it is it is an app that's
crazy yeah and it's like but they they
want us to know they want they being
rabbit the lamb is not an app of course
cloud-based
was ever I'll just read the do you want
me to just read there the official
statement is we are aware there are some
unofficial rabbit OS app website
emulators out there we understand the
passion that people have to get a taste
of our Ai and lamb uh instead of waiting
for the R1 to arrive that being said to
clear any misunderstanding and set the
record straight rabbit OS and lamb run
on the cloud with a very bespoke AOSP
and lower level firmware modifications
therefore a local bootleg APK without
the proper OS and Cloud endpoints won't
be able to access our service rabid OS
is customized for our one and we do not
support thirdparty clients using a
bootlegged APK or web client carries
significant risks malicious actors are
known to publish bootlegged apps that
steal your data for this reason we
recommend users avoid using these
bootleg rabbit OS
apps yeah I don't really know what he
means by bootleg um you know someone
Michelle was guessing that someone
extracted the APK from their R1 and then
distributed it okay and like they were
able to run Android apps on the R1
yeah they ran a bunch of different
Android apps on the R1 which means
whatever the OS the R1 is using locally
is AOSP based which is fine I don't
think they didn't they didn't actually
they didn't like lie about anything
right we're not nobody's trying to like
gotcha rabbit right now I think the Just
the Funny kind of ironic thing about all
of this is that everyone just keeps
saying why is in this nap and it like is
like the lamb is running in the cloud
rabbit OS is running in the cloud all
this stuff but there is an AOSP like
build on the device that is running all
that stuff and because you could Port
that to an Android phone because it's
Android it could just be an app so the
big question is just like why
Hardware yeah period question mark feels
very much a business decision over
anything other practical other than that
right I mean I think the the pros here
are if it was an app you have
everything that I can do and this lamb
in the future that does sound really
cool we all agreed large action model
sounds really cool except imagine it
with way better computer power computing
power better interactions better camera
pretty much better everything better
screen better battery life better yeah
but then when you're rabbit the better
part of it is selling an app and
marketing an app is so much harder than
a bright shiny teenage engineered orange
yeah this developed an insane amount of
hype you can tell that because every
time we've talked about it on the
podcast it gets like more Vi views than
anything else yeah so we'll talk about
it next week
also obviously um so yeah I it's like
you know nobody's trying to got to them
it's not like they lied about anything
it's just it's just kind of adds to all
of the irony MH about how it definitely
could be an app yeah the interesting
thing to me too is like if you take this
statement and you assume it's true right
let's say that this is a bootlegged app
which I'm assuming what he means by that
is that some saw the popularity of
rabbit they made some random APK app
that simulates what it's like to be on
rabbit OS let's say that's true okay but
then the device itself still runs AOSP
does it not yeah it that's what everyone
is assuming device itself runs AOSP
that's what everyone is saying but they
seem to have a problem with us pointing
it out weird I don't know why they're so
defensive think they're worried yeah
sorry that's the part that confuses me
sorry cut off no yeah but give me your
thoughts I think that they are worried
that people will think like that nothing
is running in the cloud and everything
is local and that you could just run
everything on the phone which is clearly
not true that's not how Google does it
either you know like Gemini Ultra runs
in the cloud on all these servers Siri
runs in the cloud when you query it it's
like it's not like it's just going to be
all local but I think that they're
worried that people think it is because
if it all was then yeah you could just
put it on a phone I saw a comment which
was just of obviously not great comment
but it was saying like I don't get Mar
Marquez really thinks these large action
models could run on a phone it's like no
he just thinks that the way it's running
on the rabbit would run better on a
phone because the rabbit is less
powerful and all the cloud-based stuff
is still going to work better yeah as an
app it makes no it doesn't make all as
much sense because it is an app because
it's an app like yeah giving this thing
better Hardware would not make it
worse it'd be crazy if it did let's be
real if it did that'd be a sweet spicy
take I know so I don't know just think
it's
funny I'd buy a phone in that orange
immediately I did hear I don't even know
what it would be there was there were a
lot of comments like that on the review
that orange of like yo that color though
that that design which is the entire
reason I
got I feel like that color needs to be
the color of the like hats or scarves
that celebrities wear when they don't
want the paparazzi to take photos of
them it's straight up like broke Quinn's
Quinn took a photo of it next to the
Humane pin and it was like artifacted
cuz his computer or his um phone's like
camera just could not compute correctly
what exposure it needed yeah the
difference between like the side of it
and the top of it or whatever as it
reflects light both overwhelm the sensor
so it just looks like it's a flat
oversaturated orange stripe on your
screen it's crazy it is impossible to
get this on camera the eclipse isn't
going to break your sensor the rabbit R1
is yes anyway it's wild I still want one
I still kind of want one oh my gosh I
want well here's the thing I want it and
then I think about what will I do with
this and I go nothing but it look so
cool on my desk oh my goodness I'm I'm
glad at least it doesn't die immediately
here's a question you want one what were
you going to do with it because imagine
it's an app like would you how often
would you open that app on your phone
well that's what I'm saying because it's
not an app I'm interested in it okay so
they got you see I see their point like
they got me cuz if it was an app it
doesn't work
so like I would I wouldn't really use it
as an app like the actual functionality
yeah the functionality is very Oh you
mean because it Li to you current how it
is right now well even just like the
current large action models are only
four apps and it's not great like I
still think there's a huge future in
that and how it's working but like
that's not what the consumer getting
yeah like eventually some point down the
line if that thing works I would take it
alongside my phone not instead of a
phone but I 100% would take that
alongside a phone instead of just an app
Pock like think about this what what if
the rabbit could just be your assistant
on your phone it could but you have a
camera on your phone but you still carry
around a camera I do yeah that's what I
mean like exceedingly rare by the way
yeah that's what I'm saying but it's
that kind of device to me like I feel
like having that separated out of my
phone I would enjoy that yeah I could
see this being like a a launcher an
Android launcher cuz there's a lot what
I was thinking is this is kind of like a
D phone you know there's like that whole
Dum phone Trend that's going on right
now it's like you can't use social media
and you can't do this and you can't do
that it's not even a trend just people
are talking about it as a as if it is a
TR left my desk it's like the I mean
like I see what you mean it could be
similar to like the Palm Phone words
secondary you keep your phone in your
bag and then you have this like less
intrusive like you're going on a hike I
totally get that I think the thing that
keeps striking me about like why this
thing is useful is cuz it's an assistant
and it has to be useful to you and to be
useful to you you need it to know all
the stuff about you but because it's
separate from your phone and doesn't
connect to your phone at all it doesn't
know any of the things about you and so
you have to you have to really dedicate
yourself to like shoveling information
into it to get anything out of it or
they can just allow Google to input all
my information and there it is if they
partner with Google the more I think
about this and how we said before like
imagine if you actually hired an
assistant and they couldn't do a timer
that's what I just now I'm going to
think about every time they're like oh
this can't do it or it's messing that up
and be like if I hired an assistant and
said hey can you Uber Eats me something
it's like I can only do door Dash and
also I can't really read the menu and
I'm not sure where you're located for me
to do this right now I be like I would
fire them I would not not yeah that's
that's how I'm literally thinking about
this and by the way it does have some
cool featur that are like super human
features like I point it at my screen
and it reads the whole page instantly
and gives me a summary I was going to
say assistants can read usually but like
this will be faster than human so I'll
point at like a page long article and I
don't think I can scroll yet because I
don't think it reads on video but I'll
point it at like a full page thing and
I'll say Give me a summary of that it'll
give me two three sentences like right
away like that's that's super useful
like if a person could do that because
it's got a brain and it's got an eyee
and it like looks at the thing and reads
it for you that's cool so that that
glimp of like what it could be is fun
but yeah it just needs so much more like
information about the person and that
information is on your phone yeah so
that's that's what gets me really
curious about what we're going to see in
the next couple weeks because we have
Google IO coming up we have we're
starting to see some rumors about Safari
and Siri and AI starting to like melt
together a little bit in possibly uh
WWDC announcements so I'm obviously
curious about what Siri could look like
if it was good um and what Google
assistant could possibly start to do if
they see what these AI assistant in a
box things are good at and you're Siri
is listening to you right now I said
Siri and I sorry for saying Siri so
often Siri Siri Siri um so sorry about
that but yeah I'm curious what we're
going to see from these from these
companies in the next few weeks because
they clearly have seen these
announcements and they're clearly going
to start to make some stuff yeah
hopefully yeah yeah we'll see if Google
does I mean I think we're all expecting
Google to but it's also you trigger
there you go Google Google Google Google
Google you you triggered
yeah it's Google so I can't promise that
they will actually integrate this even
though this is their time they should be
they should be doing everything that
this does but just in Google assistant
right now but it's also Google Google
should just buy it it's also true about
it's also true about that's a hot take
about Apple
because okay spoiler alert we had a
conversation with Jesse the the
co-founder of rabbit like before we got
to use the product right and I asked him
all these questions why is it not an app
what do you guys think of your head
start over these other big players and
one of the things he talked about was we
believe we're going to have this Head
Start essentially
forever
because it's it's like we've put in the
work and we have this L and that
iteration will always be one step ahead
of whatever Google or Apple decides to
start making today and I I get the
philosophy it's like GPT 4 will always
be ahead of whoever started after GPT
that's not true it's not necessarily
think about the Vision Pro what about
Vision Pro like it's a first generation
headset from Apple right but it's later
than and it's got way more features than
like a lot of the other headsets yeah I
guess like training wise if you think of
their of their of their models as
iterating on top of each other they they
think that their their lead is safe in
that department I don't know still hard
to justify I doubt it that's sentence is
exactly what I would say if I wanted
someone to pay me for the work that I've
done and just license this out and get
bought out by someone but on the other
hand like when's the last time Apple did
anything about
Siri
2014 I kind of get it from that
perspective did we ever do a bet of like
what would come first like updated
better Siri or the calculator app cuz if
we do now we're finding out yeah this
might be a huge year they both it could
both come out at dubdub this year yeah
yeah this could be the biggest dub duub
of all time the biggest dubdub of all
time the only way they can one up the
Vision Pro dub is calcor app we could be
here all day yeah I don't know I'd say
go watch the review I I stand by all my
thoughts on the device itself uh which
mostly are about the fact that the
promise of what it could be in three
years of updates is something beautiful
and crazy and super helpful and wild and
if they are able to get there awesome
but buy buying it today is just taking a
like a lottery ticket towards maybe that
future yeah and so it is what it is
today it's gotten one software update
that doesn't kill the battery anymore in
a single day great they got a long way
to
go uh at that pace yeah one down many to
go I would put it that way um okay we
got to take a quick break but we got one
more little Roundup of stuff we got to
talk about after so we'll get there
right after trivia
[Music]
before we get into Trivia today I just
want to put out a call because I really
wanted to do a trivia question today
that I couldn't find all the info to I
wanted to do a real or fake these
devices actually run Android under the
hood and I found a good few good ones
but not enough to really make the
question so if I just assume yes I'm so
interested if you are a developer if
you're an engineer and you know of a
wacky ass device that's that runs
Android under the hood tweet at me Ellis
Roven I'll redownload Twitter just to
get these submissions and maybe next
week we'll do a fun rabbit inspired uh
question but right now the books Palmer
this
week the best device ever made this week
the three of you challenged the two of
us to bring you a question that involved
both Microsoft and birds oh wow that was
fast and I came through I have it
here in
2010 during the leadup to the release of
the Windows Phone 7 Microsoft landed in
hot water for including a bird themed
app in their advertising that according
to the developer had not been ported to
Windows Phone 7 what app was it there's
no way that 2010 Windows Phone 7
marketing materials featuring this app
did not launch with the phone but it was
marketed to launch with the phone yeah
like in like Windows Phone 7 ad there'
be icons for all the apps and this
popular app was there I'm thinking about
and this is still on the podcast so
we'll be right
[Music]
back welcome back so I had a question
here which proved that we have a lot of
opinions on it because we just argued
about it off the air for a couple
minutes but we brought it back I was
just like writing a short recently for
the studio Channel and I wanted like 30
more seconds because it's so hard to put
your thoughts into one minute especially
when you know people are going to be
like well you didn't even talk about
this or you didn't do that but but
sometimes we don't have enough for a
full video so we do a short of it MH and
Tik Tok because it started as a short
form content started adding longer and
longer Tik toks and like vertical
endlessly scrolling content is what I'm
talking about do you ever see YouTube as
having the shorts videos be long longer
than 1 minute what would you like to see
it as what would be the cut off you
would be okay with YouTube you never
change it should never change it past a
minute leave it a minute YouTube Longs
yeah come on that's marquez's joke
YouTube they've got Longs already they'
got Longs okay what let me just ask you
something real quick when you're
scrolling on Tik Tok 5sec video Scroll
10c video scroll when you get to a twom
minute Tik Tok What do you do I watch
two minutes no no yeah yeah do you want
to my likes right now I'll go in you
watch the whole thing whole thing you
watch the whole two minutes I bet you I
have a liked one in here that's all
right well I would argue that most
people when they encounter a several
minute long video on their Tik Tok feed
just leave and I think I think probably
most people's behavior would reflect
that right I've never seen a Tik Tok
longer than 90 seconds that wasn't about
conspiracy 90
seconds it's always if I if I see if I
see that thing at the bottom I'm like oh
man does that say about my 33 minute
video of that's a YouTube video that's
yeah we're talking about this is a video
of a British Grandpa eating American
sausage and gravy for the or biscuits
and gravy for the first time for more
than a minute yep and it's great it's
adorable I watched the whole thing of
course I did cry no but he's very
excited story arc 45 it's him getting
explained what biscuits and gravy is and
then she explains that well it's really
just a scone because they can't really
buy bis American biscuits
algorithm there character development in
your Tik Tok that's crazy I would say
most people's like nighttime scolling
Before Their Eyes fall out of their head
before they go to sleep is like just
just 30 seconds 30 seconds 30 seconds
and it's like super quick so that's why
I wanted to pitch the like where would
we draw the line on YouTube yes I think
the line is perfectly set 60 seconds or
under gets it in the shorts feed so that
people who are scrolling the shorts feed
just get short videos and if you want to
upload a 2-minute video or a five minute
video you can it's just a YouTube
video I don't want I don't want to like
just go into the conversation with
Marquez I feel like I'm heated here my
take is that we should um eliminate
short form
video meaning you can't upload anything
under a certain
length now that is a service I would
watch interesting that wait we have to
start this minimum 45 minutes it's
called Tik Tock Tik Tok Tik Tok Tik Tok
that's the name of the platform Tik Tok
on the clock baby mhm that are you guys
just talking about quibby no cuz quibby
quibby you could do it could be sure if
I mean no I think quibby was 50 okay but
those were like produced that wasn't
like user generated content I want user
generated content where the limit is
five minutes like when you hit the
record button it's it does not stop
recording for five minutes we could be
done talking it's going to keep
recording the videos that you upload
have to be at least 5 minutes or it just
doesn't so if you stop talking after 4
minutes it just keeps recording and you
you just need 30 more seconds before you
can upload you have to Pat it you have
to keep talking so my question though
you have both made shorts before whether
it's for the studio Channel or the main
Channel unfortunately yes and I know you
write for them how many times have you
been like there's like three more
sentences that feel super beneficial
it's like old tweets I actually how do
you feel how do you feel when a too long
tweet hits your timeline change the
verbit
I think you hate it if I see I see the
Seymour button I'm scrolling down yeah
I'm bailing so you can still upload
longer tweets but it's like that's not
for I saw someone who had italicized
part of their tweet the other day and I
was like I'm getting off this do you
remember what I said I I think I we were
bringing that up and I was like if
you're formatting a tweet I'm not
reading it I don't know I don't you're
too much into this what's that Meme
where it's like I'm not reading all that
bro I'm
congratulations sorry congrats though
we're sorry that
happened 90 seconds I want 90 seconds
you want 90 seconds I want the that
actually is a good idea I want 90
seconds I don't want to add a lot to it
I think I think would you
ever upload a two-minute YouTube video
along uh today no highly unlikely but
there have been shorts where you're like
I wish there's two more two more
sentences I got in here that feel
important so I agree with all of your
logic I just think that it's a slippery
slope because I don't disagree second
you hit 90 seconds you're going to be
like if I had 10 more because that's
what Tik Tok did they were originally
like 30 a minute three minutes yeah 10
minutes 10 could hour could you argue
the YouTube slope isn't as slippery
though because they already have the
long version so it just it kind of gets
just blurry I just think you need to
Define it YouTube has defined it so
clearly it's ver 60 seconds or less boom
you know if it's vertical 60 seconds or
less it's a short and when you get in
that short feed that's all you're going
to see I think 90 seconds wouldn't
interrupt the
feed there's Ellis is giving me a thumbs
up off camera I don't know if anyone can
see I agree with I want 90 seconds I
think 90 seconds is a good let hear yeah
yeah you get to the you say all right
Neil goes I think Andrew's on to
something here all right NE Tyson Neil
Mohan CEO of YouTube he watches his
podcast he's like all right I think
that's a good idea 90 seconds is still
cool for the short feed so now he does
it so now the shorts feed is anything up
to 90 seconds is viable for the shorts
feed and everything over again must be
regular YouTube video yep what is
stopping another person from saying Neil
is cuz he listens to the podcast and he
did 90 seconds minutes is totally viable
look at Tik Tok people watch minute Tik
toks all the time I just need 30 more
seconds you know I brought this up
because I wanted you guys to help me
with my explanation that I don't have I
hate that I agree with both of you I
agree with Andrew cuz I every time I
make a short I'm like I literally only
need three more seconds but but I do
think it's sort of like that the work
expands to the time allotted thing it's
the same thing that as soon as something
gets normalized they're like if I just
had a little more it will always be that
way I agree 140 characters I bet if you
look at your average character length
per tweet the second that limit went to
280 your average went over 140 I bet
yeah and I bet the second it goes up
again we all just keep going if the C
more button went down to 500 we probably
start having some 200 tweeting eating
breakfast anymore okay they're they're
they're like writing and now that's what
that's the future Elon wants this is the
future Elon he wants people to blog on
Twitter which I don't want to see I will
say Tesla does their uh their like uh
updates for software updates they'll do
like a whole post on Twitter and it's
literally like text inline images like
formatted text and everything it's like
a whole blog post and it looks great
it's like a great use of like all the
tools you have available on Twitter and
of course it's Tesla doing it because
obviously they're connected but like but
then you all the people yeah I see those
posts and I'm like wow that's great and
then I see all the other versions of
people doing way too long tweets and I'm
like oh this is bad there's too many of
these maybe only verified businesses can
do it and then nobody else oh you're
saying you should give people like real
reasons to be
verified if you have the gold badge you
can do that and if you don't you can't
dang elitist I don't mind that I'm okay
with
that yeah I'm just I feel like I'm
writing the short script like a caveman
to try and get everything I want to say
into it yeah sucks this is why it should
be banned in America that's why we're
baned Tik Tok that's because short for
Content sucks reals is also 60 or less
right yeah yeah is it actually it might
be longer I think real is 60 can
I I'm still confused about the pause
button real can be up to 90 you can tap
90 Instagram I always Instagram I've
never found any issues with you
especially the iPad app but other it's
true it is you do everything right I
feel like it's got to be I scroll reals
a lot I would say videos on Instagram
are confusing though because there's
there are longer videos the player is
inconsistent as ratios are
inconsistent and they got rid of that
there's there's music with photos now
you can just scroll through pictures
with music TI Tok does that no Tik Tok
does that also really annoy as a person
who just wants to watch videos like all
of those different formats in one place
is confusing it is confusing it's kind
of sidetracked how often do you guys use
reals versus Tik Tok actually I'm an old
man I'm way more in reals I like reals a
lot because I can send it to my friends
so much easier than having to
like Tik Tok I I watch and I like and I
just show Claire yeah reals I just send
to Ellis and Tim every time I think
that's the Instagram Advantage is like
we have the social graph so people are
going to make stuff to share and they're
going to want to put it here because
that's where their friends are and so
exactly what you're talking about is
true like if you're going to share stuff
you're going to share it through the
built-in tools so I watch Instagram
reals more often because I share them
more often there does Tik Tok have send
to friends sharing tools I mean you can
send a link to a Tik Tok obviously you
can also send it to Tik Tok account if
they have one you're less likely to find
their Tik like friends with any of my
friends on Tik Tok so that's so I'm
friends with my friends Instagram send
them can you be friends with people on
Tik Tok I believe so follow people we
sound so old right now no there's
friends on Tik there's friends on Tik
Tok yeah I'm friends with you both wait
follow me or friends with me I'm pretty
sure friends I think it's the same thing
I think it's the same thing the same
thing so I would have to follow not
Instagram reals algorithm is getting
fantastic it served me a video with like
eight plays that was just disc golf with
Creed music and I was like holy that's
incred you on all right this is what
okay you asked if I use Tik Tok or reals
more don't have Tik Tok on reals I go on
Instagram to look at an image that
hopefully doesn't have music playing at
the same time and then I black out and
then I look to the right and it's dark
outside and I think what just happened
and then I realize I've just watched
like an hour of reals and I'm like I
gained nothing from that please that's
all of the shorts call your Congress
person don't just ban Tik Tok let's not
stop there ban every short form video
content on the internet we need to buy
Tik Tok and make it a long form app do
we have 12 billion you did 10 minutes on
it
already you need to follow more
wholesome educational shorts creators
that's what you need do they have to be
educ you need you need to get rid of
your phone and and hot spot to an eer
all day like I do the only way to stay
off social media I don't know how I
would follow Luke Foods otherwise he's
not he's not a long form gu did you see
he threw out a pitch for the white socks
no I big I'm doing the e-reader thing I
haven't seen anything we super speaking
of music did you
see did you hear
how is the buzzer KN 30 times
you you know what function I still can
do on my e-reader Hots spotted to my
phone that I use as a phone what that
listen to music with Bluetooth
headphones oh that's crazy on Spotify
speaking of it Con the Bluetooth
headphones connect to your e-reader
that's Hots spotted to your phone yes so
is it pulling the music from the cloud
from your phone no it's pulling it from
Spotify but through the data from
through the data from your phone yeah
that's correct cool
Bing simple as that easy as one two we
have a quick Round Up of headphones
that's that's what we're trying to get
to sorry for the Segways being horrible
okay let's start with the nothing ear a
okay nothing ear a are out there's some
new branding some new colors and the
nothing ear has gotten refreshed new
prices ear a is 99 bucks that's this one
the yellow one and this and then nothing
oh these are both the ear a correct and
so you have the nothing ear there's the
big one and those are $149 yeah uh quick
summary quick thoughts I have only
listened to the E A and I was brief but
they sounded fine I like them I I like
these better I use the ear one and the
ear two I like these better because this
is a more pocketable size yeah wait did
you notice this the white ear a they put
white on the stock of them and it looks
so much better than oh yeah black on the
St which the yellow one should be yellow
on the stock because now this proves
that they can do it so the yellow once
it's in your ear you can't see any
yellow and this is a cool yellow yeah I
like the earray a lot honestly I
probably would recommend them over the
extra 50 bucks for that um I have this
charging which care as much the battery
life's really good on these I've had
really good battery life on them I think
I have this weird relationship with the
nothing earbuds where I love them and
don't really like them at the same time
so what do you love and what do you not
like about them I mean my two favorite
things and one of this is super
situational is they fit perfectly in my
ears which I think is the most important
thing with any earbuds which sometimes
makes it really hard to shop for your
butts they also have touch controls
where you cannot accidentally press them
when you're readjusting in your ears at
all so the touch controls are all on the
stock just like the old nothing buds
like they've always been um the downside
of the touch control is to turn it into
transparency mode it still
goes and that is the worst noise in the
world yeah it does that weird sound but
I really hate when you're like trying to
tap your earbud back in because it feels
like it's loose and then you pause a
song or play a song or skip a song um so
I like that a lot I think they sound
good I'm sure they don't anywhere near
is more expensive earbuds um the battery
life is great I like this new case it's
smaller the case is shaped like a pill
box just so you know that's what the
design inspiration was is what they oh
yeah yeah and the footprint overall
doesn't look that much different than
the other case but it's one of those
things where like the shape of it is way
better but like it's wider but it fits
in your pocket way better kind of like
air pods fit really nice in your pocket
yeah um what I don't like about them
when a see is working it is fantastic
like I have been mowing the lawn and
I've been like for like 10 minutes and
then be like did I turn the blades on I
can't hear any like I can't hear it holy
cow did I remember to turn the blades on
am I even cutting grass right now wow
and then I like hit a stick or something
loud outside happens and it feels like
it just resets all the noise cancelling
and then I can hear
everything and if it's a really really
high pitched I don't know exactly what
it is but when I'm weed whacking if the
strings hit the fence it does this like
peaking
like screeching noise like in your ear
like it's trying to counteract I don't
know exactly I used to have those with
the Oppo buds that I used to use the the
OnePlus buds when they would like
slightly slip out of my ear when I was
running because they would get sweaty
and when i' push them back in my ear
there'd be a screeching sound that would
happen it's it's really strange and I
mean there's there's no way that OnePlus
and nothing use the same chip suppliers
right maybe like you know use the same
Qualcomm earbud chips with the same us
noise cancelling no there's no way
there's no reason they would ever have
the same stuff um yeah the transparency
Mode's not that good in fact sometimes
it's really hard to tell whether
transparency Mode's on or noise
cancelling is on because when it noise
cancelling is not working well just kind
of sounds like I can hear everything
interesting the only time I can kind of
tell transparency mode is like
if I'm moving enough where there's some
wind getting in there like it's just
super loud wind and annoying and feels
like I don't have a good seal but yeah
so that's why I like really like these
and and knowing that the noise
cancelling can be that good but that it
never actually stays that good is really
frustrating yeah they look so nice
though I'm a big sucker for how good
they look I like the yellow that's nice
so those are replacing the nothing ear
stick are they replacing the ear stick
the ear stick are gone now okay because
I I said that on Twitter and someone
said they weren't and then I said oh I
missed that and then they were like well
there's hints that it's not going away
so they told me it's replacing the ear
stick they told you it's replacing the
ear told me in person that is replacing
the ear stick okay I don't like I didn't
like the ear stick but I know there are
people who don't like the silicone tips
so they said when the ear stick stock
runs out which it looks like on their
website they are no longer their website
says out of stock yeah they're no longer
selling them so yeah nothing tell us if
we're wrong and then we had before the
ear 2 which are now just called the ear
um so I guess they're just kind of doing
the like it's the new one bad name kind
of vibe you know new year new me new
year new me so technically it's the year
three sort of kind of yeah they didn't
change a lot they said the sound
signature is better and they changed the
what the sound signature I don't know
what the hell does that I don't know
Ellis I'm not an audio You Should Know
audio boy it's how they sign
things anyway uh they have ceramic
drivers that used to be made of like
plastic material I guess or something
else um they said that that should
increase the sound quality by a decent
amount and then they also have uh like a
bunch of controls in the phone where you
can like tune it a little bit more and
you can only do that with the ear the
ear and not the ear yeah there's very
basic controls in the A and I think it's
way more in the the regulars and then
they have uh LDH LD lhdc 5.0 support
whereas the ear the ear a do not but
yeah I don't know I for me like the
wireless charging is prettyy important
because I have a lot of wireless
chargers sitting around and I'd like
that I can just when I get home just
plop my earbuds on wireless chargers and
I literally never think about charging
them yeah that's a big thing for me cuz
like plugging things in manually is
frustrating to do every single day I
sound like a I'm really lazy but it's
just what I'm with you on that with my
phone I guess I just I'm not like a
power user earbud user so that doesn't
make a huge deal I would say the these
have better low end in the base and like
of fullness is a little bit better but I
still like how those sound like the
sounds yeah I would I think they look
better I think the case is cooler I
think almost everything about them is
better but the sound quality is not
quite as good and they don't have um
wireless charging so my thing with
earbuds like this is that I'm never
using them for sound quality so it's
like I just want the better case I want
the better features I don't care if I
want sound quality I have or I would get
better headphones you know yeah so sick
I humbly disagree but that's just that's
just because I think the airpods Pro 2
are like legitimately the Maxes no the
buds like are some of the best sounding
headphones you can buy oh I disagree
they sound terrible you're just
wrong you're wrong you're wrong
scientifically you're wrong
subjectively you're wrong those are like
those they just are better than
everything else okay they're way more
than okay we got some headphones to get
through uh cuz a we got more okay so we
got these recently which are the Bose
like clipon earbuds these are very weird
looking yeah I kind of love these yeah
they're kind of fire in the weirdest way
so I'm going to have to take my
headphones off to show you guys but I'll
try to like say it out loud um basically
you take them off they
clip
like did any of you guys have fake
earrings magnetic
earrings nobody get they used to make
like a magnetic earring that you could
put on without actually getting your ear
pierced so these are like reminds me two
buds that magnetically have a clip
around the back of your ear and then sit
right above your earlobe yeah so it kind
of looks somewhere between like earbuds
in your ear and like earrings maybe
earrings yeah I don't know they're like
hugs around your ear so there's a part
inside but it also holds on to the back
side of your ear I honestly think they
sound pretty darn good they are
everything the Sony link buds ever
wanted to be pretty much so they're they
basically feel like openend open open
back headphones I literally can't hear
you right now but when you % volume but
when you but when you pause it pause it
pause it so when you pause it you can
hear me perfectly because it's
transparent it's like not covering your
ears at least that what' you
say you said at least for me oh once you
pause it it's basically like having a
full transparency mode like fully like
you can hear everything around you and
if you play your music low enough it's
basically like a transparency mode and
you can hear everything practical
transparency mode I mean which the link
buds were because it was essentially a
like a dut hole that would go in your
ear and the music would play around the
outside but you still had a physical
hole for exterior sound to come into
your ear this to me is more comfortable
and sounds better and works better it's
really really good I'm impressed they
kind of start to hurt my ears a little
bit after a little bit of time um just
because they're like literally clamping
to your earlobes but I think people will
probably have like mixed results on that
um they're also
$300 damn so they sound really good but
you have to be a very specific type of
customer to want these I would say
bikers I would sayn people who yeah
maybe yeah running I tried running with
these I did not like it really yeah
because it it makes my ear LS bounce oh
need stronger
ears yeah my cartilage will have a word
with you commuting walking outside just
being out when you need transparency
mode these are these are super good I
think biking would be a good definitely
a good one yeah all right other stuff we
got we got the fairphone uh it's called
the fair buds because we had the fair
buds XL last year that were the overear
headphones and then this year we have
regular FRS ginormous case um Prett
pretty big earbuds this is right in line
with the ferone yeah pretty big earbuds
that like stick out of your ear I think
that's the wrong ear a lot Oh no you're
right or no it was oh it is right it
says
right yeah oh the shape of sorry the
shape of that just feels like theong
those stick out a lot yeah it's quite a
lot they all those repace parts fine um
the main things that you can replace in
the fair buds is like all the batteries
so you can replace the battery in the
case you can replace the battery and the
individual buds um they sound fine I it
said in their marketing it was like oh
for when your earbud dies and you can
replace the battery but I've never had
an earbud die in my life same I have on
pretty much the battery or the circuitry
maybe it's the C oh so that's a good
point I don't know what it was but I've
had multiple nothing earbuds which is
also why I find it hard to recommend
them in the past where just I open the
case after not using them for a bit and
one earbud won't charge I've had that
happen at least three times I'm I've got
I feel like that's probably not the
battery it could be the circuitry of
just connecting it and then never
charging it but to me it might as well
be dead because I can't use it anymore
cuz those one PL buds that I used to use
stopped working on my runs because I got
like I would sweat a lot and uh I feel
like just replacing the battery is not
going to fix that that's why this makes
Fair it's a strange it's like a strange
proposition because that's not like the
battery dying in a earbud or a case is
not something that happens to me very
often It's usually the circuitry gets
messed up so I don't know um but these
are €149 which is about
$162 a little bit expensive uh but they
use a lot of sustainable materials and
that kind of stuff and if you like
tinkering you can technically take them
like completely apart if you want to so
there's definitely an interesting
conversation to be had about these as
far as like repairable versus super
durable yeah I mean there's always been
this Conspiracy Theory with wireless
earbuds when uh everyone switched to
wireless earbuds that the whole point
was that you were always going to lose
one and that you were just going to have
to buy a whole new thing of them um or
like apple will sell you a single airpod
but it costs like like $60 or something
it's like quite expensive um so I don't
know I I've never lost like a single
earbud but I know that that does happen
to people fair enough last one something
just came out you actually probably know
more about these than I do there's not a
lot new yeah yeah these are the Beats
Solo 4 they're on ear headphones which
traditionally I hate because they
generally hurt my ears yeah some people
have said a hybrid is the best of both
worlds this is the type that's truly the
worst of Both Worlds to me yeah there's
no active noise cancellation
um but they are USBC now or they didn't
used to be be USBC they were micro which
is insane they were micro I just oh wow
I think so right the beat solo 3 I don't
know I can look it up I think they were
micro um they can now play wired audio
even when they're dead which headphones
always used to be able to play and then
for some reason the beat solo 3 couldn't
do like when they were dead they
couldn't play just over the uh audio
jack which is very weird now they can
they have apple find my and Android find
my device support because the Beats
brand is sort of Apple's like we're also
going to sell things to Android users
brand they've always done that like it
has the like inst instant pair thing
when you like open them up in front of
an Android phone like Fast pair it does
all that stuff yeah um yeah they're
already starting to hurt my ears so
that's great nice nice they're very
they're like pretty compact for
headphones as a as opposed to earbuds
but yeah they're 200 bucks I think the
case design is really annoying it's kind
of a pain to take them out of and put
them back in the case I agree um you can
jam a cable in there and yes they are
USBC and yes the last ones were micro
USB and cannot believe they just updated
that I haven't tested them long enough
to figure this out but uh the package
said 50 hour battery life on it and then
the piece of paper inside said 40 hour
battery life on it so that's something
to consider I guess um but yeah they
they have you know find my support's
great they're beats man yeah do you guys
think the Beats brand actually still has
any poll
whatsoever I think they probably still
sell a ton oh yeah I think they still
they just have such a like in store
presence a brand name like when you can
go and Best Buy yeah or whatever you're
just gonna go get some 12y olds some
headphones like what do they want I
probably airpods or beats that's kind of
the headphones which Apple owns both of
yep I was going to say I think airpods
took the took the stand people want
airpods I yeah I but I still think Beats
sell plenty if you want over your
headphones the only options for airpods
are
$550 so you know there's that are they
replacing those this year or next year I
hope soon I hope like two years ago they
replace them with an on button and USBC
please and also maybe lighter
working yeah they break so easily anyway
that was our headphone Roundup if you
think we missed any significant ear buds
that came out recently let us know I
don't think people who work on Beats
have even met people who work for Apple
probably not no they work for Apple but
yeah technically yeah that's the most it
was the most like Acquired and then
don't talk anymore acquisition I've ever
seen they just had to like email them be
like can we have fine my on this and
that's all all right yeah yeah I was
going to say they use apple silicon so I
don't see why they would be that I don't
know I don't know but then they don't do
any of
the the maybe because they're protecting
airpods they actually if you use these
with an iPhone there is spatial audio
Yeah I was goingon to say yeah and I
think they're so it is kind of the same
if you work for Beats uh send us an
email podcast MKBHD
table Ellis is just trying to get an
email from Dr Dre have you ever even
seen Apple par Jimmy if you're
watching yeah I don't actually want to
talk to Jimmy iven you're you're fine
you can stay Jimmy or joh Johnny Jimmy
Jimmy Jimmy iven Jimmy iven the not
Johnny with Dr yeah and the co-founder
of inner scope records that's more
important that's the cool actually no I
take that back chimy I'd love to
talk I bet you're super cool you have a
Jasper John's PT in your office I know
that about you it's it's beautiful let
me come see it in person well all right
trivia speaking
of just you have to send it now I think
that's it yeah we're in
already all right trivia so quick update
on the score after last last week's uh
chaos of Marquez getting the point not
getting the point what by the way come
on man as someone who was not here I
thought those were both Fant fantastic
questions come on man Ellis killed it
and you guys just like I got them both
right well yeah David you didn't is
prohibited from being a tech journalist
literally not allowed anyway Marquez has
seven Andrew with seven David with seven
first
question we were talking about
birds the scientific name oh gosh s
Sonata Chris
Tata what is the common name of that
bird what the heck is a
[Laughter]
kist come on this one's easy I don't
know how it's easy this one's easy SOS
Sonata crada Chada wait
sayano sayano yeah oh also I don't know
if this is how you're pronouncing it so
bird people are going to yell at me for
sure I'm trying my best this is why I
people are going to be like squack
David and I definitely just have the
exact same thought what is that David I
wrote it in curs no it says it says yes
I will not accept okay fine I'll accept
it okay thank you I get what you were
trying to do but be ni you can see it
it's the big b right there David drew a
beautiful picture of mountains on his
whiteboard so what did you guys all say
3 two one blue J correct I originally
wrote pigeons what did
I I was like pigeon would be the
funniest answer well that's cuz Adam
kept saying it was obvious well that's
why I thought it wasn't pigeon because
there's something we were missing in it
that one's bicus trus berus
trash do you know what I don't get
though people hate pigeons and love
morning doves they're the same thing
people like pigeons morning doves you
guys do the dove call I
cannot that's
to that's the pigeon
call that's a different bird if you are
still listening to this thank you wow we
we love you all all right next
question if you got this deep in the
podcast
comment comment what baros V I want I
want two comments somebody has to write
pigeon and someone has to write Morning
Dove and then like the one the bird like
more be the two top comments of our
episode we can fight for it pigeon team
pigeon or team morning team pigeon why
they call morning
doves because you never see them at
night uh next question uh I received a
challenge from our three hosts to come
up with a trivia question involving both
Microsoft and birds so in 2010 during
the leadup to the release of Windows
Phone 7 Microsoft landed in hot water
for including a bird themed app in their
advertising that according to its
developer had not yet been ported to
Windows Phone what app was
it I found that really funny the
Microsoft's like yeah we got it and they
were like why would we make a Windows
Phone app VPN by
[Music]
Google drop
C I'm going to be so mad when I get
Google Assistant
snapshot Lon oh that's a bird loon
that's a bird Google Now on call
jooy what do we got
oh mark on a phone I said tweet
deck I said Twitter I assume that was
wrong David what did you say say the
answer
first David what did you no the audio
listeners need veracity okay I also said
Twitter that is wrong the correct answer
is Angry Birds oh I'm so mad I didn't
think kind of remember that now that you
say that that's angry roio
yeah wait trivia people can I get a
point if I remind you of something you
forgot no I didn't forget it's coming up
next maybe hit me did you hit me
there I didn't forget there's a bonus
trivia question well there was one that
was before the the Angry Birds one what
is the X and Xbox stand for yeah oh so
what a silly episode episode pigeon
Transit
shoelace
androidify field
trip Google translator
toolkit Google bulletin I love that this
is a bit Google
Clips Follow Your
World message center okay what do we
have Santa
Tracker I was gonna write that okay I
erased what you guys wrote so I hope I'm
I hope we're all wrong
wait wait hold on did you say what yours
is I said combo like the pretzels with
the pizza in the middle no like combo
because it's like games and media I
don't know oh oh like a
cross that's good but no yeah I wrote
extreme David extra e please be wrong
please be wrong than God okay what is it
wow ex the correct answer is the X was a
reference to direct X which is a
collection of programing interfaces oh
my God for handling tasks related to
multimedia especially game
programing could come up with that do
you remember how many programs you used
to have to like download it be like
direct DirectX you don't have direct X2
on your on your game yeah the latest
version you say that but as someone who
has a Windows computer at home I
exclusively use to play 20-year-old
computer games yeah direct X yeah the
fact that direct X is backwards
compatible all the way H pretty cool I
agree I just think selling something to
Consumers and being like directex 12
people are Xbox name is Iconic so it
works yeah but nobody knows that it
stands for direct there's some other
things like that right direct Xbox do
you think direct X do you think X like
current X is because of direct X I I
like that I call it X and nobody knows
what I'm talking Twitter you mean
Twitter yeah direct X it was a bad joke
but seeing nobody understand X was very
fun what's the newest
Xbox series X Series S and series X does
it run Vulcan or does it run oh that
would be the series V that would be the
v-bucks the v-bucks the vbucks vbucks
don't vbucks vuck Vulcan bucks Vulcan
bucks Marquez take us out we're off the
