Friday, it'll be five months.
It was the hardest thing that anybody ever told me.

or I have to look at pictures every day of his Facebook page,
but it's the only connection I have with him,
because I can't speak to him directly.

of 44-year-old Vallon Broadus,
Detective Mark Kennedy meets a man who was there
when Vallon was killed
to tell him the names of the suspects.

Kennedy decides to cut the witness loose.
- That wasn't the way I wanted it.
I was hoping this guy would name the suspect.
[sighs]
[clock ticking]
narrator: In the first 48,
Tulsa Homicide responded to the murder
of Vallon Broadus,
learned he was killed by a shotgun blast
in the driveway of a house,
tracked down the woman who lives in the house,
and discovered Vallon
might have been lured into a trap.

[cell phone rings]
- This is Kennedy.
All right, thanks. Bye.
That was the guy we just interviewed.
The one that we thought brought the suspects to the house.
He just had a change of heart,
and he gave us some contact information
about one of the people.

"Ike Nicholson."
narrator: 48-year-old Ike Nicholson
has convictions for robbery as well as drug possession.
- Ike Nicholson is with a girl.
She's a white female.
narrator: A white female is also associated
with Ike's phone number.
Both suspects have open warrants.
- We need to talk to them.
[dramatic music]
[indistinct police radio chatter]

[phone ringing]
narrator: Two days later...
- This is Kennedy.
Oh, awesome.
narrator: Police arrest the suspects
after staking out their house
in the nearby town of Bethany.
- All right. We're gonna head that way.
Are you ready? Let's go.
- Yeah.
♪
- Come on back, guys. - All right.
- I want to know the truth.
Why you guys basically went to Tulsa to begin with.
- Prostituting them out?

- OK. When was this?
- Um...
- Where was Ike?
♪
- You were waiting for Vallon to show up.
- Did Ike have a weapon with him?
♪
[dramatic music]

- Did you see Ike do it?
- So then after the shooting occurs,
did he say he shot the guy?
♪
- Did you find your sister?
- But now that you look back in hindsight, I mean,
obviously Vallon didn't have anything to do with it.
♪
At this point, I don't look to charge her.
I mean, she's, you know, acting like gonna be
a cooperating witness.
We'll do Ike next.
We'll see what he has to say.

Were you in Tulsa last Wednesday?
- I'll just get to the point, man.
Obviously, I've talked to the people at that house.
And I think it would be smart
to tell your side of the story now.
- [scoffs]
- Well, I-I find that hard to believe.
- I know it's hard. I know you're in a bad place.
I think the intentions were probably pretty good,
and that's what I want to get to.
What was going through your mind that caused this to happen?

- Did you know that Val was supposed to show up
at that house?
- Yeah, yeah. - All right.
So you're sitting in the car,
and whenever you see the maroon car pull in--
he pulls all the way up under the carport.
- Did you see Val get hit?
- Well, I saw him.
I saw the look on his face that he might not--
I might have shot him.
- What was your--
- Bad deal.
All right, we're pretty much done here.
I appreciate it. Well, I'll have these guys
come in a get you here in a minute.
Thank you for your honesty.
All right.

There's other avenues they could have taken.
They could have got law enforcement involved.
They didn't do any of that.
They tried to do it on their own,
and here's the result.
You know, this whole thing was for nothing.
I mean, she wasn't with him.
Didn't look like Vallon had her,
and Vallon ends up dead,
and this guy's going to jail for it.

[somber music]

narrator: Three weeks after Vallon Broadus was murdered...
[indistinct chatter]
- This is me and my daddy right here.
- Mm-hmm.
- Girl, them pants was so tight.
- Girl, look at him.
[chuckling]

- My pain is for his kids.

He would have been a great asset
to their lives.
♪
He was important and loved by each and every one of us.
He was--he was the one that would always want
to keep our family together.
Losing somebody to this magnitude
is devastating.
