Secret Garage UPDATE #8 THE BIG QUESTIONS

on now I know this is not the video that

you want you want to see more out you

want to see more things constructed and

unfortunately that's not happened yet

but we are ready for it the aluminium

tracking is down on the top ready for

Tom to come and park his Digger across

there is a muckaway service which is

going to come and collect some of the

dirt for me very nice thank you very

much so everything is all ready for the

next part now I've not been down here

doing it of course because the weather

has been terrible I've gone off and I've

done a little side project off in the

barn however that small project has

grown to be absolutely usive it's not

quite finished yet but it's not far off

I've also got makeer Central coming up

this month so there's a lot going on

before we actually come back here but

things have happened which I can now

talk about which is also very good

you've got a lot of questions I've wrote

a lot of things down for me to answer so

well I better answer them then

I okay first question I actually need

your assistance in everyone is asking

that they want to have some rock samples

but it appears I can't Ship Rock and

soil samples I certainly can't ship them

abroad I might not even be able to ship

them in the UK so I need your assistance

if you work for a postal or a shipping

company and you know where around this

please let me know because I've got

myself a load of jars I've had labels

printed up I've been hacking away at the

rockface and Colin fur tunnel dirt does

exist now if you want to get your hands

on one of these the only place you'll be

able to get it is at maker Central which

is n 18 for 19 Birmingham now I don't

know how many of these to make there is

a ticket Link in the description if you

are going and you do want some Colin

first dirt samples please use that link

and then I'll know how many jars to fill

up CU it's quite time consuming and if

only 50 people are going to want them I

don't want to fill up 200 and if only

you know if I fill 200 up and 400 of you

want them then I'll need to know I I

don't want anyone to come turn up want

them and they're not there and also I

don't want to spend hours doing

something that no one's interested in so

and I'll know roughly how many people

want them and then that is the only

place at the moment you will be able to

get Colin fur tunnel dirt but we're

working on

it getting ofed into something he just

didn't think he's going to be an

American Colin why are the sockets so

low okay now all the sockets throughout

the tunnel are about 150 M 6 in off the

ground which is quite low but there was

a reason for that while we was working

in there is that we actually plugged the

hydraulic pump which is the thing that

powered all the pen and all the winch

and everything that used to run on an

extension lead into the nearest socket

to where I was working run back to the

pump and back to the winch so I could

turn it on and off without having to get

out the hole walk across the tunnel

switch it off and then walk back again

because often I'd be covered in like

sticky clay I didn't want to spread that

throughout the tunnel so we had that

quite low down we didn't want cables

lashing up the wall so that's why they

were quite low in there now these ones

in here although they have continued

with the lowless these aren't actually

staying at this height no now if we have

a look under here there is a

massive excess of cable basically

there's going to be a workbench across

the whole length of this end bit there's

a company called boxo that make these

wonderful drawers and stuff that you put

your tools in they're going to come and

K it all out thank you very much so

obviously these need to go above those

workbench High you know there's no point

having them down here they'll be on

cupboard so that's no good so these ones

aren't staying but the other ones are

cuz I quite like them at that he if I'm

honest with you now another question

you've got is about the cable Colin have

you used black Flex for your ring made

yes I have and I know this is not

correct and it's 1 5 mil as well which

is even more incorrect should be 2 and a

half mil but just think guys bigger

picture this is not necessarily all

going to stay like this all these cables

are quite easily accessible you just

pull all these little sideboards out as

you saw when I dealt with the flood over

there so it can all be dealt with but

think of this bigger picture when this

whole thing is all finished not just the

garage but the tunnel right down to the

bunker it's going to have its own

electrical supply brought into it cuz at

the moment I've got a fuse board at the

shed entrance there's another fuse board

at the bunker entrance just up there

there I'm going to put a fresh one in

because my actual electric Main and

electric box come into the house is not

far up above that so I'm going to drop a

whole new cable in and then it can have

one fuse board to serve everything and

at that point various sprits of these

can be changed some of it I might leave

cuz let's face it nothing much is going

to be plugged into half of it a Hoover

at best this was perfectly enough for

that so but there's probably going to

want to be a kettle or something down

here a't there especially in the bunker

so we'll need something a bit more meaty

for that but I will keep it black though

I'll probably do 2 and 1/2 mil black cuz

I don't want to see gray cable coming up

the side into these boxes do they that

won't do no it might take a bit longer

about 7

Colin col if you're driving a car on

this is a 3/4 plywood floor really fit

for purpose well there's sort of two

answers to this question the first part

is that this bit might not ever have a

car on it at all the car left of course

is over there it will come down it will

get turn around on its turn table it

will go back up again it might never

drive off that now of course if you do

want to drive it off to bring it to the

side because of course this room is

perfectly big enough to have two cars in

it so you could fit two in here then

obviously it would need to support the

weight of a car now if I do end up doing

that what I might end up doing is taking

this FL floor up cuz this's his 18 mil

thick ply swap it for 12 and then put a

layer of 6 mil plate Checker plate over

the top of it and that will be solid

enough to hold the cut now there's also

o a garage floor company that's

interested in doing something I don't

know yet what I'm going to do because I

want to see what the final room looks

like obviously a dark floor a dark room

might all be a bit dark I might want to

do stainless steel Checker plate to

match the DeLorean who knows but there

are the options now this floor probably

is going to get ripped up because

there's that much damp and moisture

coming out even with the doo midify

running all the time it's still got a

bit muggy in here and it's got a bit

moldy in patches there was some carpet

down here which was never one of my

questions Colin why did you put carpet

on it was only an old carpet just to

kind of protect the floor from we did

the next bit but it kind of got a bit of

damp and it made the mold worse but once

the room is done and it is all complete

and we won't get the condensation

problem because everything will be

covered in concrete it won't matter then

the face of a five dice there they are

and

then so this rock face Window how

exactly are we going to do that okay we

need to discuss this cuz there are any

theories on how we are going to preserve

this as a rock vase now the most common

one seems to be put up some glass and

fill the back up with it with resin and

let it go off but of course I can see a

few issues with this you've got to get

rid of all the bubbles and also when

resin goes off it does emit a tremendous

amount of heat so is that going to crack

the glass if you use a bit of perspect

is that going to kind of mist it and

frost it up so Bubbles and heat is an

issue with the resin of course we could

have like a double glazed units sat in

front of it is it going to want

ventilation behind it and at the top so

does it have lowlevel ventilation coming

in to kind of vent past it and then high

level ventilation going up to Atmosphere

at the top I don't know is that going to

have any issues on the room with

bringing moisture in because obviously I

know from all this being exposed how

much moisture comes out of this rock vas

tries to get in the room so I don't

really want that to happen I don't want

there to be any connection between the

rock face and the room I'd like it to be

sealed off but of course there in lies

the problem with the condensation

potentially now I've not even uh kind of

discussed this with the structural

engineer yet because obviously if you're

going to leave a chucking chuffing gret

hole out the side of the wall then we've

got to have some sort of strength system

above it but I mean I'm sure we can deal

with that is if anything it'll just have

to be a little bit smaller but you know

we want it to be massive don't we want

to come around and of course it wants to

be lit up as well so it's going to have

to have a light behind it to light it up

now do we use that light

as part of the anti- condensation so is

that like like a heat lamp which keeps

the area around it is it a heat lamp so

the area behind the glass is kind of

kept warmer which stops IT

condensating cuz if it goes all the way

around if there's lamps underneath

lighting up that would help so there you

go that's kind of after I mentioned it

there was a lot of comments on this and

they are the top Solutions but if

anybody body else has any other

suggestions as how we can preserve this

rock face cuz the other one of course

was to just rebuild it like make an Al

Cove and rebuild it and then have

something in front of it but you're

never going to be able to rebuild that

cuz this is you can't cut it off as soon

as you crumble it away it never you

can't put it back what it is or else

it's just going to be a stone brick wall

anyway we've got a little time to think

about that because that's right over

there there's a lot of work going to

happen before we get to this problem but

I know you guys like thinking of these

things now if you want to see this model

I am taking it to make a central so you

can see firsthand how big everything's

going to

be can you fly Bobby it's not why don't

you fit a sum pump now it's not a bad

idea cuz obviously when all this flooded

and I have to lift it all up and it was

all water creeping underneath it that

was the comment I read the most you

should have a low point and a sun point

and somebody also pointed out I could

probably put moisture sensors like

underneath the floorboards if they

happens again I get an early warning

rather than me just lifting a bit up and

going oh there's a load of water or me

looking in here and going that's wet

that shouldn't be wet but if we look at

the model we can see where we could

potentially put one of these Sun Pumps

righty ho the next bit we dig is going

to be deeper because it has to take the

car ramp bit which comes down and sinks

into the floor so of course having a

deeper bit of floor is not a bad place

for a sump bump but ideally it would

want to sit in a little deeper chamber

than that because obviously there are

float switches and stuff on them so it's

probably not going to be triggered until

it's like 6 in deep this whole bit with

6 in of water in it is already a

catastrophe so we'll probably put a

little box somewhere underneath

underneath the car probably where it can

sit and then the pipe cuz obviously it

needs to pump it somewhere will go out

of a vent which is also going to sit

under there because obviously having

cars in an underground room fumes and

whatnot they'll all sync to the ground

they need to be able to be drawn out so

there's going to be a lowlevel vent

right underneath the car which will go

out to atmosphere there's a high level

vent up here which has already been put

in probably a fan in front of the

lowlevel one which is activated when the

car lift is activated so every time the

car comes down the fan will run for x

amount of time suck all the fumes out

and push it all out and then we can

probably have the exit pipe to a sump

pump going up there as well beautiful

it's kind of already in the

making yeah also thank you to everyone

that emailed about getting the one in 10

scale DeLorean I've had many offers if I

haven't got back to you I will do in

time there was quite a lot of you some

people are offering to 3D print them

some people that know of models various

other things there's even channels that

do model making so I think what we could

do would be good fun is to get everyone

that's offered one in some sort to do it

and then we'll have loads of them and

we'll just have a pile of one in 10

scale DeLorean everywhere that would be

awesome hey Christmas tree now I noticed

there was still a few comments asking

Colin you got solid roof how do you get

the car in and out where's the car come

down just remember guys

the car doesn't come down here on the

model I am stood here and the car comes

down over there there is more to be dug

out yep now the one thing I like about

you guys is you don't miss

anything dear and you notice stuff now

when I was putting this rebar in I was

at pains to say it couldn't touch any of

the steel work because you want it to be

completely isolated from any

electrolytic corrosion but of course

some of you pointed out and you've got

this mesh around here which you stabbed

it through and quite rightly in places

it is touching that and of course that

is touching this now what will happen

once this rock is all disappearing soon

I'll be able to get stud in front of it

I'll run the grinder down the outside of

it because it sticks out a little bit

and then I'll just stick the Crowbar

something behind it and just pop it all

off cuz it's not actually welded to this

rebar it's just there to hold the

concrete back but it's kind of barely in

it and you should just be able to pull

it out if I can't pull that I shall just

cut the bits out around the rebar when I

do the next bit I might not use the mesh

I might do like I've done up here and

use a bit of plywood and over there I

actually used the celotex and to be fair

it wasn't too bad in the tunnel it was a

bit Pokey and difficult and the mesh was

good but I got bit more room here do me

a favor don't disturb my friend he's

dead tired why don't you paint the walls

well of course there's two size to this

there's the other side which is exposed

to the concrete and then there's inside

the room now the other side I've done a

video previously on Rust a little bit of

a fine layer of rust actually protects

the metal against the concrete cuz the

two kind of react and then neutralize

each other and cancel each other out now

if I was to paint the other side I'd

need to paint the whole thing really

well CU any scratches or any blemishes

in that paint basically the whole rust

corrosive electric would focus itself on

that one point and then it would

probably blow through which is a little

bit what happens on cars when you get

like Stone chips and stuff so that's

easy to just leave it and then on the

inside normally I just clean it down rub

it down with a bit of WD40 and that's

enough but of course cuz this is taking

a little bit longer to build and it is

exposed to more damp and corrosive

elements din trol which is a company

that makes anti-corrosive paints they've

sent me some Rust Converter spray which

I've tried on patches it does convert

the rust but it kind of discolors it

slightly so I'm not too keen on that

because obviously normally rust

converted you spray it on and then you

go over it with paint of primer so it

doesn't really matter if it changes the

color so they've sent me this test

sample of wax which I've sprayed on here

I've rubbed it in it's pretty good we've

retained the meal scale finish it's not

sticky and it's not tacky and it's not

too shiny I like it and also let's have

a big shout out for Barrett steel newor

steel group we're just supplying the

steel for this whole project I feel I

should mention them again they're saving

me a lot of money if you want some steel

go and use them so where's Rick gone

okay so Rick is 64 this year so he's

obviously getting close to retirement

age and also he hates Winters and it was

around about the beginning of November

that he decided kind had another of this

and it was a wise choice to be fair with

a winter we've had but anyway he didn't

say he wouldn't come back and help me at

all he just said he was 3:00 on a Friday

now the trades people will understand

this probably better than anyone else

cuz if you can put your head back into

when we were plumbers if somebody rang

up at 3:00 on a Friday and said Colin

can you go and do this job you'd meet

him with very little enthusiasm so that

is where Rick is he's 3:00 on a Friday

so I have to imagine myself asking

myself at 3:00 on a Friday Rick will you

want to come and do X would he want to

do it probably not essentially doesn't

really want to do much at all but he's

quite happy doing that now of course

while he's not been here I've even been

doing most of it myself or of course

when it it really is a twers job glad

Charlotte come and help me and obviously

when you've been working with your mate

all the time and then you go to work

with your partner there are certain

things that you necessarily can't do but

have to be a little bit more cautious

about you're right

now Colin and then of course there's

other things like if Colin's super tired

and struggling and she's looking at you

going this is painful to watch like me

trying to undo this strap on this rsj

and then me kind of losing my temper and

then she stepping down and doing it

really easy got to eat Humble Pie every

now and again cuz if I'm not careful

it'll just be a funny story around the

Christmas table you going get the don't

I drive the car and then of course

finally and most important and the main

question you all ask how have you got

permission to do all this is this legal

okay so in the UK when you build

something which is permanent you need

something which is called planning

permissions because I think in different

parts of the world there's different

things I think in America it's called

City approval which I've noticed in some

of the comments so essentially here what

you're supposed to do is before you

start building anything you you know you

put your plan proposals into the council

and then they will review it which is

says on the websites Tak about 6 weeks

it normally takes a little bit longer so

you put your plans in and then they will

stick like posters and stuff up

sometimes around the neighborhood which

says like you know this is what this

person's you know going to do if

anyone's got any objections or anything

then they can obviously write in or

whatever you know there'll be a little

thing on the poster so you can kind of

object and obviously they'll send

letters out to all the neighboring

properties as well so if I wanted to put

an extension on the house that was what

happen you know the neighbors would get

letters there' be a thing outside and

then anyone who wants to complain about

it or has got anything to say about it

not necessarily complain obviously they

can get in touch and then of course the

council will look at it and they will

say yes it's a good idea no it's not a

good idea but the thing that they're

mainly looking at is things like what

impact it has on the neighborhood is it

in keeping with the neighborhood does it

cause any harm or anything like that now

luckily tunnels are obviously

underground so they're not taking

anyone's light they don't really impact

anybody obviously the process of

building them potentially could but they

don't really take that into

consideration because you know

theoretically that's only a temporary

situation you know we've all had

neighbors that have done alterations to

their houses and you might hear the

hammer drills and stuff going all day

but fingers crossed that's not going to

last forever it's only going to be a

matter of weeks or months and then it's

all done with so when I did the bunker

because that was the first thing I ever

did I was going to put in planning

permission beforehand but Sky actually

sponsored that

never actually signed that project off

until the week before I was going to

start so it kind of got put in literally

as we began it and of course with the

whole six week thing we nearly finished

it by the time and come out and actually

had a look at it now with the tunnel I

didn't as for permission cuz it was a

secret tunnel and I was like I can't you

know I don't want to raise the alarm on

here cuz obviously digging you know

underneath your house and stuff and

things like that I generally wanted it

to be a secret I didn't want to alarm

the neighborhood and obviously putting

in permission before and getting all the

letters sent out and the things stuck

outside on the lamp you know the posters

put outside but we don't want that it's

a secret tunnel so I never bothered and

I just left it and obviously had there

not been any YouTube videos they

probably wouldn't have come around at

all but it was till about YouTube video

6 that somebody at the council saw it

and then I got a phone call or a letter

I can't remember now and then the guy

come out to have a look and he literally

come round at the worst possible time

we' just spoken through up into the

kitchen like there was nothing nothing

underneath it so there was no steel

structure or anything it was just a

gaping hole and then you could look up

see the house foundations and I thought

oh my God this is the worst time for

anyone to come out cuz this is the

moment where this project looks like the

craziest ever you know as you're digging

under the hat but he came out he had a

look at it you know it was really good

and to be fair the council have been

absolutely fantastic with everything

I've done they've kind of said like you

know you should give us a bit more

warning sort of thing but they've always

been really good so yeah know that's all

good n then the Garage this is obviously

at the front of the house and it's a lot

bigger Construction in terms of its size
