prepping for demo day so we had to get
everything out of the kitchen so we've
gotten everything out of the cabinets we
kind of made ourselves a Mak shift
little kitchenet situation in our living
room so that we can actually have access
to some stuff over the next 3 months
while we renovate the kitchen all of the
pantry food items all our spices
everything that we'll go back in the
kitchen is now in our living room and
that's just the way that we're going to
be living for a little while so now
we're to a point where I need to remove
everything that we want to salvage and
save one thing is all of the hardware
this is all vintage Hardware that I
found when we kind of made over the
kitchen that I'd love to repurpose into
the new design I just have to make sure
that we have enough and kind of pair
them with some other Hardware I also
want to save all of my little cafe
curtains that I made and we be reusing
in this space what I'm also going to do
is put signs on the things that we're
saving what I realized doing renovations
at the cottage and working with
contractors is that you cannot overc
communicate there's so many people that
come in and out that things can get
missed and the last thing I want is for
like our refrigerator we're saving we're
putting in the garage is for it to get
like dumped or something like I just
want to make in our dishwasher like the

okay so this is a wrap on day one of
demo so this is the first time that
Romeo and I are going to see it without
the wall we don't know we don't know how
far they were able to get today but they
worked all day I think we're going to be
able to see like how big the room is
actually going going to feel you don't
know how bad I wanted to pick up a
crowbar and like tear something up but
you know like priorities the baby but oh
I wanted I wanted to do it so bad I was
so in I was so excited it feels so much
wider obviously we they haven't gone up
in this side yet they were able to get
all of the Cabinetry all of the
countertops out today they were able to
expose the center wall so that I can see
what's happening so so that they can
actually remove it and they were able to
go up in the ceiling on the dining room
side not even 24 hours ago we were in
this kitchen making brownies and quesas
we were we were literally cooking less
than 24 hours ago in this kitchen and
now it's like not here it's like not
here I mean we were literally cleaning
it out yesterday going to follow this
the roof line for 6 fet and then it's
going to be 5T of flat in the center and
then 6t down on the other side so we're
going to be able to gain 2 to 2 and 1/2
ft in the center of the room which is
going to make the whole Space feel so
much taller because now we've made it a
lot wider because we've doubled the size
by making two rooms one room although I
did want to get my hand dirty and
actually demo some stuff they did about
two weeks worth of work for me and you
in one day is it really muddy down there
yeah it's been flooded which is not good
for the foundation yeah the good thing
is this uh
clay the clay doesn't let the water go
inside avoid the water going
under all the space is
fled our living room flooded and it's
been a fear an ongoing fear of trying to
maintain it because I just don't think
that that trough where it jumps down
here and dips down makes sense way that
this is planned it was just just an old
school way of of thinking that's not how
they would do it now they would never
create this hole because the brick drops
down right here and makes a hole next to
our back doors not only did our living
room flood but also it's creating extra
moisture and water pouring underneath
our house and could potentially in the
long run really really hurt our
foundation So the plan is to eliminate
the hole and the containment of water in
this area by removing the brick so that
water that does pour over from the pool
and rain in general can simply pour down
into a proper drainage path instead of
pouring into our house and collecting
under our house ruining the foundation
progress update on day three of demo
we've got the old porch roof gone demoed
out got that junk out of the way for us
to do the cathedral ceiling which is so
good we've got this window demoed out
and remove removed which is awesome
because that's going to be a solid wall
behind our oven they've got some
supportive pieces in here just for now
while they're going to work on the
framing for the cathedral so interesting
that this used to be a door used to be
an entryway that would have gone into
the living room the front living room
the formal living room and something
here I think something there I'm not
sure kind of looks like another door but
it's very interesting just getting
everything cleaned out and then this
electrical sub panel will go away and
we'll have our single panel cuz we don't
really have a place for a sub panel we
don't have a lot of closets downstairs
so so
exciting so this is day four of working
on demo and new structure of the ceiling
so they have to put extra support for
obviously load and size seismic you know
we have earthquakes here so they need um
some sheer walls they're doing a lot of
out work and a lot of reframing on some
old damage of 2x4s we're basically
taking this out these two windows are
becoming big doors you know so like like
skinny doors four of them side by side
all this damage that we had previously
from old termite damage is going to be
pulled out and and fixed a nice new two
code header above these doors you really
get to feel how tall it's actually going
to be in here it's not going to go all
the way to the peak obviously cuz we
chose not to do a point and do a a full
Vault but we're going to have it chopped
a little bit so that we can run AC and
things and it matches the rest of the
house cuz we also have that in the in
the house and then they put mesh down so
this is where the wall oh they removed
the whole wall they removed the whole
wall I didn't realize they were saw in
here everything so they've got two
supportive Things They removed the whole
Center wall that was behind our oven
this is where that the Cabinetry was so
there wasn't any brick the brick floor
was added after they had already had
that so we need to patch the brick floor
just in the center of the space and over
by the by the sink area this was an old
entryway to the living room they put
more support here cuz it was not
supported well at all big post here for
our vaated Cathedral for our ceiling
this is going to be big support you can
see they also put another one here this
is just 4 days in I know 4 days from
like okay let's let's break wall this
would have taken us probably like 2
months you can tell like the newer
pieces they're just adding that
structural support that it really
needs it's officially day five of demo
and they are going to be working on
making the hole in space for our new
French doors and closing up the old
one

it's just because it kicks out over air

did we're going to remove that post here
and move it over here I see so it's
going to happen it's going to be not

so to reframe is the whole door get the
header beam engineer beam in a
post that's so
annoying Safety First yeah it is what it
is and he want me to reframe this whole
open oh yeah they got rid of the old
header here
today is officially beam day they are
going to be installing these
280 lb bra beams in the ceiling for not
only structural support but also the
look that I wanted and the exposed beam
look that matches the rest of our
house

what I wanted to add to the space like
the real beams and the structural
changes that needed to happen
specifically in this area my arms could
never yesterday they lifted 2 180 lb
beams up four guys and ladders and
Leverage and it was fascinating to watch
because I'm learning so much through
this process they obviously have years
and years and years and years of
experience on site doing construction
like this I love my contractor because
he's like telling me and and educating
me as I go because I love to know stuff
like this he's just they literally
fantastic you live in Los Angeles area
and you need a builder I got you Mega
Builders I will always leave their
information in any of the description
boxes of these videos because they are
excellent so they were able to do lots
of structural work today this area is so
unusual part Original Part edition part
Edition Edition the roof line and
everything is all different it ended up
being fine but a lot of things needed to
be replaced just to make sure that it's
done exceptionally well all of this
structural work is amazing this is now
going to be the center of the room and
it's going to be the flat part of the
cathedral ceiling look how small I look
in this space look how much taller we've
gotten the ceiling it was so worth it I
knew it was going to be worth it truly I
was like I just I I Feel It In My Bones
I just I have to Vault this ceiling it's
going to make a major impact on the
space and it totally totally does so we
were able to get to 10 and 1/2 ft in the
center of the room and on the sides they
drop down to 8 ft so you can kind of
imagine the kind of pitch that it's
going up to so right now I'm kind of
standing at the oven like this is where
the oven is going to be right in the
center of this flat part of the ceiling
framing work they still need to do is
frame up this hole where our French
doors used to be and then add the proper
header here for our new French doors
going out to the pool and just bring
this whole like frame in this whole
section so that we have the frame in for
the doors to be custom another
structural addition that they're making
to this space is actually adding sheer
walls which is the addition of plywood
behind the she rock it makes the walls
really strong and it helps with like
seismic structural issues which never
even knew that before but that's one of
the requirements that the engineer
really wanted in order to further
support these walls and just make sure
that it's really really really
structurally sound and it's going to
last forever and ever and ever I also
think think that this right here there's
an old gas line here a pipe sticking up
and there's a circular old circular
space in the roof the old like shingle
roof there either was an oven here or a
fireplace maybe a gas fireplace because
this used to be like kind of like a
patio very interesting I just love old
houses for all their little quirky
things that happen so things being off
and and unusual shaped is something that
I actually like because it was original
to the house or somewhat original like
for instance the house kicks out right
here so part of the slope on one side is
a lot longer than the other and that's
just part of its charm we're going with
it 40 Skylight 40 40 away okay 40 away
from the thing okay so we're keeping the
distance 27 is from here yeah we have
the other 15 a good 15 in but
here we are

Skylight is going to start right where
the cabinet stops the bottom ones oh the
bottom ones yeah cuz the top ones will
only be 12 or 14 somewhere in there cor
right but it's all ratio so here you
have a drywall still so the 27 is right
here I don't mind it at all it is what
it is yeah three in from the beam yeah
and then we do the same thing the other
side yeah this is okay we going do the
same thing no I like it because I like
that it's not in the doorway because it
brings light in where there's a wall all
right I think Jo this is it we nail it
yeah I knew you nailed it already I

it like that's a good this looks so good
by the way I saw this last night I was
like oh there's a more like nothing ever
happen this is already fixed this is
from yesterday yeah from yesterday all
of that and all of that yeah it looks so
good oh and that's the the Skylight yeah
it's beautiful the V it's flat it's
clear it's beautiful yeah you can
operate you can open it I mean nothing
yeah so it's just stationary I mean if
it's bothering too much light it's a
kitchen though so you can never give me
enough
light
today is the final day of demo and
structural changes to our kitchen we've
made so much progress in the last two
weeks of just them working on all of
this today they're going to be doing the
skylights which is super exciting to see
some new and natural light come into
this space also just going to be
finishing up some cutting that they need
for the sheer walls I don't think
they're going to be applying them today
they're going to wait for inspections
and things like that to be you know kind
of happen um but they're going to get
all of those kind of cut and prepped to
go up before they drywall the amount of
structural support that we actually did
have to add in this space was way more
than we bargained for I've never seen so
much wood but it's all necessary when
you live in a place that can get shook
up a little bit there's a lot more
things that you have to do in order to
meet code and to just protect us our
family and the structure from any kind
of seismic impact or changes and shifts
over time this kitchen will now outlive
me so I'm very excited about that so
this is the time of day that we do not
get any direct sunlight into the space
the sun is already passed the trees in
the back it has been dark in here while
they have been doing structural changes
with these two skylights it makes such a
big difference we were only able to do a
2 by two Skylight instead of doing a 2x4
foot Skylight like I wanted so it would
have been more rectangular we had to go
with what the structure should could
support and we just didn't have enough
space over here on this side of the room
to do a larger Skylight so I was a
little worried I was like oh is it going
to give me the light that I want is it
going to be able to you know give me
that sunlight is it going to be worth it
it was totally worth it I love the look
at the light that's coming in on me
right now there's obviously no
electricity in here sunlight that's
coming in at like 6:00 p.m. in the
afternoon as you can see skylights can
make such a big difference in space I
mean you see all the light that's coming
in on me that's really soft we wouldn't
have that if it was just a solid roof so
definitely worth the investment in the
Skylight themselves and just the work
and the labor that it took to actually
frame these out today I'm big on
Lighting in a home and having the right
amount of light but also playing with
the light that you can get naturally you
know and this is awesome I love they
were also able to finish up patching the
flooring today it's like it never
happened they were able to sourc the
same brick that was in our kitchen which
I don't think was crazy hard to find um
but they were able to find it and get it
here within like the same day they were
able to perfect it like the level of the
floor add all the things that they
needed underneath and really there were
a couple of spots that needed to be
repaired because this brick is kind of a
newer flooring we did see some older
remnants of flooring underneath it looks
fantastic I'm so excited this room is so
big it's crazy we are getting to the
level and style of kitchen that this
house deserves that I feel like I want
and deserve and it's it's really
starting to take shape and come to life
it feels so good being able to walk in
here without the center wall really
getting to experience the space without
the low ceilings and just what it could
become as a complete room with a dining
room and a kitchen rather than two
separate spaces so we are definitely
moving in the right direction so I hope
